Goodday all,
I'm sure I'm far from being the first or last one to post a pitiful request like this, but I recently quit smoking and alcohol (well maybe not alcohol) but I'm really trying to get into shape, more specifically do more cardio and gain some upper body mass...
I eat relatively well but my cardio is terrible and have a somewhat slim upper body and wouldn't mind gaining a few pounds.
Now the cardio is cool, my local "gym" has a "stairmaster 8000" or whatever the hell they're called but I need help gaining muscle mass.
Everybody I know is telling me to do creatine and weight gainers but I prefer advice from people who most likely know what they're talking about (hence my venture onto freettrainers.com), and not from some buff guy in a neon tank top called Tom, working in his struggling little fitness shop trying to get me to buy everything including his super-get-big-quick 2000 beginner's kit for only 249.99$ plus tax and other miscellaneous suspicious fees...
Now I'm about 6'4 200 pounds, and I can probably hit the gym about 2-3 times for 1-2 hours a week.
I'm also sure there's plenty of more info on this site but aside from my short attention span and lack of internet surfing experience, most of the posts I've read tend to be very specific situations.
So here's mine: I'm tall and slim, and want to gain upper body mass...
Supplements? No supplements? Creatine? More long hours of self-pleasuring? (oops)
But seriously, I'd appreciate some advice.

Thanks for the quick reply, appreciate it.
First of all, I tried doing the fitness plan thing, and I wasn't too successful, the info I received was too general and when I was given the choice to select "my specific choice areas" to work-out, only the abdominal one was available to choose?
Either way, maybe I should have specified more, I'll be getting a work-out program or whatever it's called from a personal trainer, but I'm more concerned about the supplement thing.
Generally speaking, most people will agree on hot to work certain body areas, but there's a lot of contradiction in supplements and what-not.
My friend is taking creatine, plus protein, plus something else called HMB (I think) which is supposed to keep the protein in the muscles, and the list goes on...
That's where I'm concerned. I have no shame in taking these things if they'll make my work-out more efficient, but anybody in a fitness shop will tell you anything to sell you all their products, when I'm sure they're mostly useless.
Also, some say take creatine/protein before you work-out, others say after, some in the morning, others say at night, some say both and it goes on.
This is where I need more help.
I'm sorry I should have specified, but then again, I barely know what the hell I'm talking about.

Congrats on stopping smoking and maybe drinking!:)
Hope you enjoy the new lifestyle with healthy food.
Don't let all the supplement sales people and advertising overwhelm you or get the best of you. They all want are hard earned buck and will compete to get it.
First, make sure you do a full body workout, not neccessarily in the same session, but over your 3 days or 5 days at the gym. You made a great choice by chossing to work with a trainer.
Getting back to your supplement question, start off by consuming a good quality protein supplement with in 30-40 min post work out. You may also want to supplement with protein to fill in your caloric needs if you can't meet the protein count in the day.
Leave the creatine alone for now, wait until you have been training at least 6 months, as you may not even need it. This product helps retain water in the muscles and gives a little more enrgy during training.
You may want to up your intake of Vit C and also include a multi vit. The list can go on, but start with the protein for now.
