Hey Everyone! My name is Bobbi and I'm new to this site, and looking for some help!

I coach a cheer team here in Canada, and we will be celebrating our ten years since we started the team up this season, however my problem is that the other coach and I are starting to run out of ideas for some stretching and strengthening routines for our team, and havent really had something that has really worked for us. I coach high school girls so I don't want anything that will build muscle but rather build strength, flexibility and endurance instead. So if anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I didn't think you could build strength without building muscle.... ?

CheerCoach, welcome to FT. There is a guye here named BigAndrew. He is a college cheerleader. He knows his training. Post your message in the General exercise board and I bet he'll find you. You could look him up and instant message him as well.

Give those girls some muscle!!

Hmm.. you could look into some yoga poses for strength and flexibility.. using their own body weight and holding each position would be great for those goals.

Resistance bands and stability balls are great workout tools that they could take turns with, there are several good exercises shown for them up under fitness resources.

Rent some exercise videos from your library and have a 'screening', where you can select a series of exercises that covers all the muscle groups!

Just some thoughts.. good luck!

Hi, I'm new to this site. Been here for one week now and have been lurking. I need to lose some inches in my waist and other places also. Is there an exercise I can do to focus on my huge waist. Can someone please help me. And could I please get the correct way to do it? Thank you so much in advance for your help.

CristalBelle - it can be done...it's just the difference of toning the muscles not gaining bulk!

charlie826 - thanks I will do that!

datdanigirl - All of your suggestions sound good...but I need smething that won't take too long to do(we only practice 2 times a week...ha ha and they can't be trusted to do the extras that they should at home on they own(only the select few do it!
As for adding bulk...remember dealing with teenage girls the last thing I want is to have them gain weight...for confidence reasons!

Thanks everyone...keep them coming!

Ooooh yes.. the weight thing! I have a 13 year old daughter and know the confidence issue all too well.

Another idea, 15 minutes of High Intensity Interval training (HIIT) twice weekly would be great for burning lots of calories and building flexibility and endurance.. Get the stopwatch and have them run/jog/skip rope/even dance! to timed intervals..

There's several threads on it if you search fitBuddy for HIIT.. here's a site that describes it: http://davedraper.com/hiit-cardio-training.html

BigAndrew is definitely the guy to talk to though, I've heard him say he designs training routines for the girls at his school.

Hi LynndaMaree! HIIT would be my suggestion for you too.. it helps boost your metabolism and keep burning fat through the day. Remember not to focus too much on the specific area you want to reduce.. your body chooses where to take the fat from when it's burning calories, you just need to find the best way to burn the most calories for your time!

thanks that sounds good! We already do kinda do something like that but like I said just haven't really found something that really gets good results yet...I mean we get results but I would like to achieve more for them! But I will definatly check out some threads on HIIT!

*** imed this to him, posted it here in case he didn't see or get it, and you all was curious to see what I said...

Well 1st off nice to meet ya, and congrats on the 10years .It is really hard to make girls workout and work on flexability, flexability being the key to cheerleading. so give this a try....

say practice starts at 6pm have them get their 15 mins and till them to jog one or two laps around the mats then to stretch on their own ,this will warm the muscles up get some blood flowing and be easier and more productive at jumps, tumbling, and stunting. If you have to make them stretch as a team, so you can watch and make sure they aren't talking and messing around and not stretching.

next after practicing, we did what we call conditioning......try this

run in place 1min or jump rope( jump rope would help in calves for jumps and tumbling)
30 crucnches
run in place 1 min
30 crucnches
squat jumps( body weight)40 sec
20 crunchs
push ups 30( 50 if you have guys)
side lunges 10 to each side)
then run in place for 1 min
30 push ups
50 crunches
squat jumps 30sec
done........
total time....... maybe 10mins at most make it go fast, that will burn calories as well as work on speed, endurance and core strength.

I have many more excercises that are great for cheerleading that you can substitute in and out for other excercises.....and you can lengthing in or shorten it as much as you like. And if they are late for practice.....then you can add on to their conditioning :)
