Welcome to freetrainer and congratulations on taking the steps to improve your lifestyle.
there is no best weight to start to make your changes.
Start now by selecting the "weight loss & definition" program from here on freetrainers.
It is a great program where you will improve your muscle and get defined.
Start eating healthy foods according to your calorie requirements. There is a post called "Grocery list for healthy eating" where you can get some good ideas.
You must increase your protein and eat better quality carbs, while reducing your fat intake.
Hope you do well.
-------------- Scales are for dead weight: We are not dead yet!
Still trying to find out how to do the Hollywood Free Press.

You can do a mass program....also...the key should be to lifting heavy and getting the calories you're already getting in healthier form....which should eventually change the composition of your body....I suggest you start slow but once you get used to lifting ....you can check out powerlifting forum...As far as I know this form of training produces some of the biggest gains...as long as you maintain your calories...you should see great improvements.....In a recent Article of Men's Journal Dave tate a powerlifting guru pointed out that powerlifted is no longer for the stereotypical powerlifter(huge guys with a lot of bf)...if you eat a bodybuilding style diet....you can get great improvements in lean muscle without gaining much fat....

I thought ur original goal was to gain muscle...when you start to train....your body will change its composition...so that you'll have more muscle(plus now you'll be eating same calories but using healthy foods....lots of protein sources, complex carbs, healthy fats, etc)...eventually you probably will want to cut calories to lose the remaining excess fat....but for now it's not essential....and the total calories also take into account the exercise you'll be doing...so fairly high caloric intake...
