What to start with is hard to say since we don't know you. It can be a trial and error thing.
Sign up for one of the programs on here and go from there and adjust weights accordingly...
As for food.. to add mass, eat lots, eat well, lift heavy.

Hey ft Community
I'm 20 years old, about 5'7" and 120 lbs. I've always been underweight for as long as I can remember. Always been the weak scrawny guy despite how much I eat.
I've had ambition to become more fit but have always stalled and made excuses not to. Well, no more, even if it is more out of vanity than for health.
My main goal is to put some damn muscle mass between the skin and bones, and put some size on them when I reach a level where I can safely and comfortably do so. I plan on investing in some dumbbells to get me started, any suggestions on what weight sizes I should start off with?

and as far as dumbbells go i would say to go into a shop or something and feel the different weights and see what you would be comfortable doing about 10 or more repititions with.
