hi people, just wondering did lifting come natural to you, and or how did you stay motivated to continue? i try to lift about 4 times a week (in basement about 5 sets of 10 on chest, 5 sets of ten on curls, and also pushups) but it seems i wanna quit after that and i wanna gain mass but i'm not motivated to keep going. with no friends that want to lift i find my self in front on the t.v . when i know i can work out more. watcha think?

I think that this is a big problem with most people. Whether it be to get motivated to start a fitness routine, or to stay motivated to carry on with that lifestyle. Either way, to stay focused, there are many things you can do. Try to find yourself a workout buddy, if you feel this would be helpful. Logging onto freetrainers and share input with others its also a great way to stay focused. Try to include fitness activities you enjoy, such as playing your faviouite sport, to stay active. Set reasonalble goals for yourself. Setting to high of goals will discourage you, set small goals for yourself and work your way up. Make a list of goals for yourself, and actually write them down. You have a better chance of obtaining and sticking with your goals if you write out what they are, and how you plan to obtain them. I also like to keep a few fitness magazines around the house, which helps remind me to keep focus.
These are just a few tips, however, like i said, motivation seems to be the biggest problem with many people. Stick with it, work hard, and enjoy yourself at the same time!
Good luck

You are doing chest and bicpes 4 times a week. You are probably overtraining these areas. Try some Military Press, Deadlifts, and Squats. If you do a total body workout, I don't think you should do it more than three times a week.

Whats up Detroit, 5 sets of 10 is ridiculous, for any exercise. Too much work for no results (overtraining). Try reducing like two reps each set at the same time adding weight. As a matter of fact just fill out your profile and get set up with a custom workout plan. FT is a great site so I suggest using all there resources. You would be suprised how much more motivation you will have after visiting this site daily. I highly recomend it.
Remember, Your muscles don't grow in the gym (basement) they grow when your resting. Work out hard, rest well, and make sure you fuel your muscles AFTER you work out (Proetein).
Visit the message boards everyday. There are some good people here.

I am new to lifting, and I agree with slorbets suggestions. But for me personally, I agree most with the comment from jeramiemaza. I would try to figure out a routine for myself, and I was going nowhere. I signed up for one of the free programs provided by FT that was tailored to my needs and goals and having their routine to follow and knowing what I am going to do next is definitely helping me stay focused. It definitely helps to have a plan. Good luck!
