hey all. i have been lifting for over 2 years off and on (the first year off and on, this one has been strict) and i have lost weight (body fat) started at about 215 or so and now i am down to 183. Well the thing is, no one takes me serious when i tell them i lift, so my question is, in that amount of time, should it be noticeable to others yet. i notice it but there is no worse blow to self esteem when people think you are jokin about something you are serious about. this isnt a thread for me to get pity this is just a thread to find out if i should be bigger than i am or if it is something that takes even longer to notice (say 4yrs)

why does that matter? you work out for yourself not for others....I mean who gives a $%it if someone thinks you work out or not...strength athletes especially often don't even look the part yet can move serious weight in the gym...remember that people can only notice dramatic changes in your physique, 10-20 lb maybe a huge diff to u but to most people it's not something they can notice....If those people don't believe u then don't discuss it with them...I think people who use weight lifting as an ego boost or to get ladies or whatever else that's narcissistic in nature are very misdirected because they will soon quit and move on....I am not saying this is your case...but it's important to keep this in mind....
you have basically been training for 1 year.....losing 27lb is very impressive....now work on filling out your frame and getting stronger.....or whatever else your goal is...fitness is for life...so pick the right reasons to do it... good luck

Do not worry what others think or say. Do it for yourself. Let me speak from experience here. Myself in my heyday I was 200lbs at 10% body fat and lifting like a machine while wrestling and playing football. I tore my knee up by taking a linebacker helmet to the knee. The next 8 years I was in limbo, afraid to lift getting fat. I went from 200lbs of solid muscle to 280+ lbs. It was sick and I was very depressed. Then I met a girl I liked and I liked a whole lot. Started lifting and getting in shape only cause I was doing it for her. I was not doing it for myself. When it came apparent she was not interested in me beyond a friendship I stopped working out (again bad motivation on my part). I jumped up to weighing over 330-340 lbs. This was May of 2004. I saw a picture of me from our company golf tourney where I won longest drive (379yds). I was like WTF is that guy in the picture.
Then I was like OMG that is me. Who is that person though. That's not Ryan the Athlete that's Ryan the Fat ASS. I remembered the days of when I was a Gym Rat, eating healthy and having fun wrestling and playing ball. So I made a change that day to do it all for myself (be selfish here, its your body). I am now at 220 lbs at 18% body fat. I have lost well over 115 lbs of boy fat and drooped from a 39% body fat to 18% all by eating right and solid weight training with cardio for my heart. I am still not where I was lifting when I was playing ball but my goals will get me there within the next year I hope. I haven't looked back either cause I am doing this for me, not anyone else. I am competing vs. myself everyday to make myself better and what I want to do. So Morale of the Story, do it for yourself and say screw the naysayer. It will show when it shows. As long as you are staying on the program and you are getting stronger and reaching your goals everything else will fall in place for ya. Good Luck Ryan (BigIrish) ============ Quoting from coolnatedawg: hey all. i have been lifting for over 2 years off and on (the first year off and on, this one has been strict) and i have lost weight (body fat) started at about 215 or so and now i am down to 183. thanks. its just so darn aggravating when people say that stuff. anyway, i have noticed my strength go up, when i started liftin in my basement with my crappy gym equipment about 3 years ago i could barely lift 60-70 on bench and now i just broke into a 205 1rm. which it may not be the greatest but i am really really proud of it. not to mention my other lifts. however, i havent really seen my overall size go up which i figured would go hand in hand. when flexed i look pretty big but when im not i look like i barely, if ever lift. oh well... to the gym with me. enough ranting and raving its time to keep working towards my goals.

No one think's I weightlift if I am wearing large clothes. That is, until I load the weight with what they do 1RM to do a warm up set....-------------- Your two most important minerals: Iron and Chalk. If you smoke or don’t wear your seatbelt, please don’t tell me the deadlift is dangerous. |

Another thing.....people who are around you alot or al the time.......they don't see it as much. As say somone you havn't seen in 6months or so. That person will be like "damn, been working out huh?" I dont' even see the changes my self, but if I look at my highschool pic....i had a lil more of a neck then lol.-------------- Friends don\'t let friends squat high... jimi u're missing my point...you see how u ranked them?
ladies first, ego 2nd, and for yourself last...well if those are really accurrate then I dont know how long you'll stay motivated...it's fine to enjoy how the ladies respond to your improved looks...or have improved confidence(hopefully not to the point where you become a jerk)....but all these secondary 'make you feel good' reasons will eventually stop motivating you....so you'll need to find something else....more concrete...and more substantive....to drive you....it's like Michael Jordan stepping on the court and being motivated by how many pretty women there are in the stands....sure it may cross his mind...but is that really the primary reason he does it?

This is a powerlifting thread, so if your lifting for your ego, then you better be lifting damn heavy weight....
That being said, why are you weightlifting??? If you noticed how much more in shape you are, then why do you care what everyone else thinks? Most people don't equate losing weight with weightlifting, they have quite the opposite mindset. So naturally, even if you do look more in shape, people may not think you are weightlifting. A person with lifting experiance, however, will be more likely to notice this difference than other people without a background in exercise. What I want to know is why do you insist on trying to convince these people you weightlift. Outside of the gym, I don't even talk about lifting all that much. I let the weight on the bar do the talking, till someone comes up to me and starts asking questions. -------------- Your two most important minerals: Iron and Chalk. well its more like they ask if anyone does so they can perhaps go with them or something... and then they act surprised when i say i do. im not really that worried bout it tho. i know that i am doin it for myself but it does help to have a little support. in the end, i do it for my own health and the "look" will come in time. but thank you all for your opionions

This is such a good post, i'm really skinny and have also been training for 2 years now, and it's true nothing hurts your "ego" more than when people say youre skinny or look cr%p but then again there is nothing better when I'm in the gym and I lift twice as much as the GUYS that are built so well!!! Don'tlift for them get satisfaction by saying to yourself that you look better!! If you can see that you have lost weight and look better then why worry about other people!!
