January 31st marked the 2-year anniversary of my last soda. I have not consumed a full soda (diet or otherwise) in over 2 years now. Sure, I've had small sips here and there on very rare occassions (rare meaning once or twice a month). I used to drink at least 2 cans of Mt. Dew, Pepsi, or Dr. Pepper every day. I went from 2+ cans to none and its been that way ever since. After the caffeine-withdrawl headaches subside its really not that hard to stick with it.

The reason I am posting this is not to get compliments or anything like that. I have noticed that sooo many people habitually drink soda instead of water, milk, or juice when they're thirsty. With about 40 grams of unneeded low-glycemic sugar per 12oz, its enough to keep our obesity percentage rate up because all that sugar is going to storage (fat). I try to avoid anything containing high-fructose corn syrup for that simple reason.

If you drink soda on a daily basis, I challenge you to simply stop, even if you drink only diet. Diet soda has extra sodium that we just do not need. Its really not that difficult. Get someone close to you to do the same so you have some immediate support. Try drinking green tea instead, or, if worse comes to worse and you can't bear the withdrawl from caffeine, buy some Ripped Fuel or something. I'm not sure how many people would be up to this, but its worth a shot. Trust me, if I can do it anyone can.

i will have to say I am very jelous of those of you who have quit all together... I have tried many times and failed miserably. to my credit I am down from 3 cans a day to just one ... and some days I skip it all together. you'll have to let me know the secret because I can't do it. P.S. I do drink alot of water and some juice too, but I guess I am just hooked.

I am going on about over 3 years now. I am addicted to milk and I dont even miss the pop. Actually I dont even like it anymore. It wasnt that hard for me. I heard that pop broke down your muscles so I just stopped drinking it. Pop has so many empty calories and all that sugar. It just isnt good for you.

Houseofdiet.....30 cans a month is better than 92. Think of all that sodium and sugar your not getting, try going every 2nd day now. I'm sure you can do it!

Thanks carivan... I will try. I am convinced that this is a stress related habit ( i consume more when stressed) any way I have a difficult group of students so I am pretty proud of myself for keeping it as low as it is considering the circumstances. Last year my freind and I gave it up for lent so maybe I will try again this year. (Lent starts in early March) It seems to be a good beginning point.

houseofdiet,
Thats perfect! Start 'weening' yourself off of it little by little for the next month or so. Then, by Lent when you give it up, it'll be for good. I'm a middle school Science teacher; I know how stressful it can be. But you can do it. Its only going to benefit YOU.

I went off soda a couple weeks ago, and since I hate coffee, I guess I'm off caffeine as well. I do notice I am a bit more tired, but that could be from busting my ass on my workouts as well =) Down with Cola! Who needs it anyways?

Wow, sodas are bad, but i must confess, i do crave them occasionally, so I usually only have them on our goodie nights, Fridays, with our kids or when I go out to eat, which isn't often. It is a lot better than I use to, I would drink more than one a day like houseofdiet stated earlier. But you are so much better off with them.

I made the switch from regular soda to diet soda March '2002. I noticed soda helps me carve my sugar cravings. I'm not endorsing the consumption of soda, but switching to diet soda helped me drop like 70 pounds in 70 months along w/a ton of fat loss. I'm trying to gain like maybe 10-15 pounds of muscle (wish me luck), and I will definetly switch to strictly H20 consumption when I cut up.

I've heard the aspartame in diet cola can have very negative reactions to people. I've also heard that diet soda also increases hunger? I doubt that one can be proven though...
I found this on the internet, but I cannot vouch for it's validity...

Toxicity Effects of Aspartame Use
Selection of adverse effects from short-term and/or long-Term use
Note: It often takes at least sixty days without *any* aspartame or nutrasweet to see a significant improvement. Improvement in health is also often accompanied by weight loss. Check all labels very carefully (including vitamins and pharmaceuticals). Look for the word "aspartame" on the label and avoid it. (Also, it is a good idea to avoid "acesulfame-k" or "sunette.") Finally, avoid getting nutrition information from junk food industry PR organizations such as IFIC or organizations that accept large sums of money from the junk and chemical food industry such as the American Dietetic Association.

What I learned the other day:
Soft drinks and many desserts contain high levels of high-fructose corn syrup, This is nasty stuff because fructose doesn't trigger chemicals that satisfy hunger, so you can overeat and gain weight when your diet contains too much of it. High frutose intake promotes insulin resistance that is linked to abdominal fat, high blood pressure, abnormal body fats and problems handling carbohydrates. Don't stop eating fruits and veggies though - they do contain some frutose but also, fiber, vitamins and minerals and antioxidants that benefit health.
