Nutrition for Weight/Cardio Workouts

So after any physical challenge, weight lifting or cardio, you need post-workout nutrition for optimal gains. However, I was just wondering if the food you eat after a workout differs depending on if it's cardio or weight training? Also, I've heard simple carbohydrates are good after lifting to help your glycemic index. Is this true and why?
