My mom goes to this place called "heaven's fitness" It's like curves, only owned by a mom and daughter team. They have a nutritionist there, who put my mom on a 1200 calorie diet for weight loss, and told her that when she get's to her goal weight, her max caloric intake should be 1800 calories, and thats if she is doing "male" workouts like lifting weights and doing 2-3 hours of running a day.
She is 5ft6, and weighs around 245. Can someone please take a look at this a explain to her what is so totally wrong with it, so I can print this out and show to her. Also, if you are a trainer, professional bodybuilder, doctor, or have been lifting for a while, please put that in bold, as she only seems to listen when it is not me, and she is sure you are a proffessional. Thanks. Oh, as a side note, she was only eating like 800 calories a day, so 1200 is much better than what she was doing. |

I saw a post by BBFit that said women should eat 10 - 15 x their bodyweight - as a close guess (guys were 15-20) - that would be a great post to show her
800 is not enough either is 1200 for that amount - her body will be holding onto her fat which is the thing she doesn't want to happen -------------- Reddy All people smile in the same language |

I know...say she eats 10 calories per lb, that would be 2450 calories, and thats for weight loss. But she doesn't listen to me, I'm just her daughter.

I think that's a little high for losing weight. The 2450 calories, but I also do agree that the 1200 calories is not enough. And the 800 calories is not good at all.

Some of the people onsite have told me not to drop below 12 calories per pound for weight loss, so your body doesn't eat your muscle, and I was calculating at 10, so maybe it would look better to her. I am just at a loss right now. Here's what she ate yesterday
7:00 2 eggs and a piece of toast 10:00 3 pieces of lunch meat and celery 12:00 Slim fast shake and a salad with some shrimp 3:00 3 meatballs(the kind you buy in a bag frozen, about the size of a golf ball) 6:00 tortilla, 1/2 boneless skinless chicken breast, 1/2 spinach. Thats all she ate all day. |

the only problem I have with that is the shake with something - I would move the the 3 meatballs to 8 pm & divide the shake from the salad w/ shrimp
any milk?? make sure she is getting calcium - that helps weight lost too -------------- Reddy All people smile in the same language |

Eventually your mom will not have the energy to work out.
A person needs a min of 12 to lose, 15 to maintain, and 18 to gain. Although these figures are only a guide line to go buy. But yes 12 is to low and she will see a loss in the 1st month, probably because the "gym" she is with has a guarantee. I am not certified yet, but working on it. And a nutritionist told her to eat processed food? Get her to get her money back and come to freetrainers and do a home workout! -------------- If you can dream it, if you can imagine it, then you can be it, you can do it. If it is meaningful enough, and you commit the energy of your passion, you will. Ivan carivan@freetrainers.com Montreal Canada |

When her weight loss plateaus she'll probably figure out how starving herself is detrimental rather than beneficial.
Then tell her that it's far more advantageous to focus on raising your metabolism than it is to put your body into starvation mode. |

A 1200 diet is rarely used in the medical profession (I am the director of Food and Nutrition at a healthcare facility and manage several dieticians) It is used in extreme cases where weight loss is needed, and usually the person is diabetic - which would also include no concentrated sweets. Again, this is in extreme cases only and is used with additional suppliments. I personally get nervious when the calorie counts drop below 1500. A nutritionist is also a very vague term - I would find out what their creditentials really are. If she is incorporating exercise into her life, she needs to follow the guidelines you are hearing about at FT - they are valid and appropriate for what you mother needs. If you need more assitance, feel free to e-mail me.-------------- Every man hears only what he understands -Goethe |

Well, I found out (and this sounds much better to me) they want her to be consuming between 1200-1500 calories a day, after she has subtracted her calorie burn due to exersize, so in actuallity have her eating between 1500-1800 calories a day. She is finding it difficult, as jumping from 800 a day to 1800 a day in aweeks time is huge, but she did make it to about 1400 all last week, and I am glad she is actually starting to eat!
