I know this subject has come up before, but I need some clarification. I've re-introduced oatmeal to my diet and have been mixing it with hot water, which I get from a high temp. tap at work which is labelled 190 degrees steam water-presumably just below boiling point. I mix my oatmeal with this and let it sit for about a min. then I mix in the van. protien powder. I've read here that this breaks down or denatures the protien making it no longer a good protien source. Is this true...would cooking meat not have the same effect? I'm finding this a very convenient way to insure I get protien at each meal, but if I'm just wasting it......

Anyone have a definitive answer?

Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.

There is some "discussion" as to this happening. However, after lots of personal research on this, I have come to the conclusion that a regular whey protein would probably be fine to do as you do. However, a high grade isolate or hydrolosate there may be issues.

Actually, hydrolosates are so fine(basically pre digested and broken down into almost free form, peptide bonds literally broken), that it kind of ceases to be a "protein" anyway.

The protein I'm currently using is labelled 100% CFM whey protein isolate from Interactive Nutrition. Would this be considered a high grade isolate and if so then I'd be better to buy a "lower grade" protein?

Fly - I don't even bother heating mine up but rather just keep it in the refrigarator.

Mike, what do you mean you just keep it in the refridgerator? Do you pre-mix the oatmeal and then put it in the fridge for later, then add the protein before consumption? I'm not sure I'd enjoy the oatmeal cold:(

I eat 1/2 cup oats with a scoop of protein mixed in it once every day. Just tap water. Enough to make it sticky. bb1 taught me that. Don't knock it if you haven't tried it.

Actually it's 2 scoops protein.

Never thought of just using warm water, I'll give it a try. 1 scoop of the protien I'm using has 31g, so I think 1 is more than enough for me, since I get lot's of protien from other natural sources. Thanks for the idea, I'll go mix some up now...

Yeah the protein just comes down to what you need to make your daily amount. It's not bad. I'll have to try it with vanilla sometime. I always use chocolate.

Alright, not bad. I used too much water, but it was edible. Actually, the protein dissolved better. I'll just mix it with regular tap water from now on. You guys always have an answer!

If you get the mix just right fly it's sticky. It don't take much water. I'm glad bb1 turned me onto it. We're very fortunate to be able to benefit from his years of experience.

Fly - I like mine more like a shake consistency. I mix mine together before bed for the morning shake and I just keep powder and oatmeal at work and mix a big shaker full in the morning and have a little throughout the morning.

Thanks Mike, I think I'll stick to just mixing the two with warm water while at work. I just want to get the stuff into me with as little hassle as possible and prefer to make it up just before I eat it. I may try what you suggest on the weekends at home though. Now if only the stuff wouldn't stick like cement to the mug afterwards making it a bugger to clean! No wonder it fills you up:)
