Hi everyone. I'm a 37yo dad in long island. The last few years I've gained about 50#. My problem is that after coming home from work, I cant seem to stop eating. I dont eat non stop, however, every couple hours, i'll go for a quick snack, followed by excessive drinking. (iced tea, not alcohol), or milk, or soda, or whatever, Then as a result, i wake up 3or so times for a bathroom break. All this results in me being tired each day. I know I have to quite this routine, however, nothing seems to help. Oh, for a few days it does, but eventually, it always goes back to this routine. I need help. Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions? Im great all day with eating the right foods, and drinking water, and really dont feel like im dieting, but at night, its a different story. Any help would be greatly apprecitated. Thanks, Will

Hi willres, nice boxer you got there, a spitting image of my sisters, hes a great dog. Are you overly busy during the day, ya know, so busy you dont have time to think about eating ? sound like you get some down time and your body tries to get the noursihment it needs at night, just my guess. try walking or exercising at night to get your mind off food and beverages, and carry a water bottle each day, so at night you are reaching for the water instead other items ?

I too had similar problems. I realized that it was a combination of a few things:
1) I was bored, so I ate a ton.
2) I wasn't eating the right foods.
3) I wasnt exercising enough.

Once I started exercising and started eating the right foods, it got much easier to stop snacking. Also, by tiring my body with exercise to match the mental tiredness from the day, I found that it would be much easier to sleep after a midnight bathroom break.

Also, if you start decreasing your portions, eventually your stomach will shrink and you will get full faster. Also try eating slower. I used to eat so fast that I wouldn't know I was full until it was too late. What I did to fix this was starting paying attention to chewing my food really good until it was pulverized. This not only slows down your eating but aids in digestion.

Also, try adding some fiber into your dinner (a glass of water with citrucel). This will gel in your stomach and slow down digestion.

The most important thing is you need to be in the game mentally or nothing will work.

Good luck to you!

i don't know if this will work or not but maybe chewing on chewing gum when you get home from work. it may make you think you are eating when you are actually not.

Also, you just have to have a real will power not to eat when you want to. make a real concious decision not to eat. you should feel a lot better about yourself the next morning if you don't eat. Then the next night you want to eat remember the good feeling you had in the morning when you didn't eat and use it as motivation.

Hope it helps.

Hi Will! I had the same problem. I did a few things to stop (although we all fall off the band wagon, see my most recent thread in the "overweight" forum, ha ha). In addition to what everyone else has already posted, I also realized that I was going to bed too late. I was going to bed about midnight, and rolling out of bed at the very last minute around 7:00-7:30, dead tired. I spent most of my day somewhat sleepy, and then at night was feeling very tired, and lazy and would overeat. I started going to bed at 9:00, and getting up at 4:30 (keep in mind, this took time going to bed 15 minutes earlier, getting up 15 minutes earlier at a time and so on until I changed my schedule). In the morning I now go to the gym, make lunches and breakfast for the family, have a minute to tidy the house, throw in some laundry, etc. Where I used to have time to shower, get dressed and run out the door. By the time 9:00pm comes around, I'm ready for bed (sometimes even 8:30!). Plus, I get my chores in before work, so that I can spend the evenings playing with the kids before they go to bed. With this sleep schedule, I have the energy to play with the kids before bed and am distracted enough NOT to over eat.
Good luck, and enjoy this site!
