Hi all!
Gotta question: I'm trying to come up with a regular grocery list of healthy foods and always end up having to compromise between health and price. Just the fact that a loaf of white bread is 68 cents and a loaf of the SAME BRAND of whole wheat bread is $1.64 is absolutely insane!! So I need some advise on what are some of the less pricey health options you guys have come up with. I'm on a pretty limited budget and run and lift weights 4-5 days a week, so I need to find some sort of descent compromise to stay fueled with health food and have enough left over for gasoline!! thanks... |

Also - in the long run you will save more on medical expenses if you spend more on healthy foods.
Eat oatmeal, very inexpensive. Eat seasonal vegetables on special and buy extra chicken berasts, etc when they are on special and freeze them When you look at nutritional content, processed foods really are not a better deal. Plus, whole foods fill you up more, so you eat less. here are my favorite cheap healthy foods: Lean beef, ground, a big package has about 14 3-0z servings in it and costs around 8 bucks, tops. pretty cheap perserving. Eggs, one of my favorites. Oatmeal, so cheap in bulk, no wonder the irish immigrants survived on it! And it lowers your cholesterol! Tuna fish - the canned variety, not albacore, which is spendier and has higher levels of mercury in it. Beans - always on special canned, but so cheap if you buy them dried and cook yourself - lentils and rice, black beans and rice, mmm. Rice - regular (not as nutritious), brown, basmati - very inexpensive abnd tasty. Frozen vegetables - actually have more intact nutrients than fresh produce because they are frozen right after being harvested, fresh produce loses nutrients as it sits out. When on special, stock up on the diferent stir-fry blends and the broccoli/cauliflower mixes. i really like frozen spinach mixed with egg whites for an omelette!!! Garlic and onions are always cheap, and add flavor to those beans! Yams are usually pretty cheap, as is squash, so many varieties! I also like frozen pollock filets - quite often on special two 3-lb packages for 3 dollars - all fish is good fish - buy it when it is on special. Most fish can be baked from frozen, seasoned with Mrs Dash and a side of microaved frozen veggies - voila! healthy, cheap and tasty. Now, no more self-made obstacles - get out there and tackle this healthy lifestyle!!!!! -------------- "To be able to go to the gym and train hard is a joy and a privelege, even though the hard work necessitates driving yourself through considerable discomfort. Healthy eating is cheap- BBfits list is cheap and it must be healthy because he wrote it. All vegetables, fruit, grain, fish & fowl are cheap and on the list. So stop buying the dear stuff and processed or 'advertised' and there will be plenty of loose change left for the dearer items. Which in the uk would be raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, blueberries and our mad beef. The rest is findable cheaply. I know you would then throw alot away as it rots in the fridge- But then you are suppossed to eat it not look at it- Buy less, it's cheaper than throwing loads away(honestly we do waste food). Asimmer has a great point on the frozen veg too- they are fresher really! and dirt cheap

great-double-posting batman, how do you do that anyway?? If eggs and oatmeal seem like a lot...try to scale down the portions a bit. I eat a lot of oatmeal in the morning, so that's all I eat, but if I ate half of what I eat now, I'm sure I could eat some eggs with it.-------------- Spark the fire that will torch the numbness inside. JOFROUD - Oatmeal and egs is not a huge breakfast and you need the carbs and the protein. One of the reasons you are getting hungrier later in the day is your insufficient breakfast. Honest. I went to school for all this. Honest. I have applied it to my life and it works, honest.
Eat before you go to the gym (see bbfits post on cardio for a reinforcement of that). After your wokrout you again need protein and carbs. At every one of your 5-6 small meals throughout the day you need protein and carbs. -------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight. |

This has become one of my main problems. I don't think I get enough protein. Anybody have an alternative to the shaker for mixing a protein shake. My shaker has given me fits. It always stinks, and the lid is warped or something, and it leaks when I shake it. I threw it away.:laugh: that'll teach that thing to spite me.-------------- Spark the fire that will torch the numbness inside. I soak mine in a sinkfull of hot water and white vinegar - gets rid of the smell. Buy 5 or 6 so you can rotate them and try different kinds, some leak, some don't. Your shaker is your friend!-------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight. |

wow, I never thought others had the problem of shakers stinking too, thought it was just me. I just pour lots of fairy liquid and brush it really hard.-------------- Accept the challenges, so that you may feel the exhilaration of victory |

I threw it away. I won't let a worthless plastic contraption get the best of me. Now I blend it with the little hand blender in a big ol' cup. Cup goes in the dishwasher, now I don't have to drink out of a smelly shaker. -------------- A broken clock is right twice a day |

I have a bit of a dilemma here. I am stacking NO Xplode, Nitrix, and Cell Mass. I also take protein shakes 3 times a day. Xplode says to take before you go to the gym and is best taken on an empty stomach, Cell Mass says to take after the gym and wait 30 minutes to eat a meal. Protein shake your supposed to take right after your workout. Right now I follow the directions, but I take my shake right after Cell Mass then wait 30 minutes to eat. The problem is I eat lunch at 2ish, gym at 7, then I eat dinner at 930-10 so I'm starving. If I ate before the gym would it really affect my supplements?

We are blest here to have many fruit stands. Just last week I bought avacados at 2 for a $1!!!
Good idea with the spinach and egg omelette. Wish I hadn't already eaten raisin bran this morning now!!! |
