Headwind, I too am a asmatic..but rest assured there is help! I have lost 40lbs since Feb 04, and i was using my inhaler EVERYDAY. Now I use it 1 or 2 per week MAX. I also started a daily preventitve called Advair. Miracle in a shell. Ask your Dr, eat fresh not frozen, lean, and stick with it...u will attain inhaler freedom too!!!:)

Quoting from headwind:

I am new to FT, and hoping this helps me. I am approximately a hundred pounds overweight, and I have pretty bed asthma. Any suggestions on how much is too much to start out with? My wife and I are expecting our first child in less than a month, and I want to be there for my son.

headwind you need to talk to your doctor about controlling your asthma and what to watch for when exercising. You have come to the right place for help and encouragement, but let's get some input from the doc on your meds, etc. You certainly should be able to start walking and altering your diet though. Very exciting about the new baby! Welcome to FT!

Great to have you here at FT! I have allergy/exercised induced asthma since I was 19, my son has had it since 8. I have to be very careful when exercising and have an inhaler always nearby. Anni is right - check with your doctor, my asthma is worse when I am overweight, so losing would be beneficial in that regard and more and you are correct in trying to become healthier, just see what he/she suggests, wishing you well!

headwind,
I have asthma, too. And, like veda, mine is better the healthier I get.
My regular physician had kept me on inhalers as-needed and I would have serious flare-ups every season change and end up in the hospital on a nebulaizer. i went to an asthma and allergy specialist and for the first time my asthma is being managed instead of just treated. he put me on singulair for the asthma and flo-nase for the allergies and i find now I can do most any exercise without needing my inhaler! What freedom! I occasionally use my inhaler, but i rarely have the serious flare-ups and I feel really great!

Start slowly, with walking and watch the refined foods in your diet - the healthier you eat, the faster the weight will come off. Weight lifting is generally easier for asthamtics than long bouts of cardio- so get on a program here at freetrainers and get started!

Good luck!

I just signed up with FT and also have asthma. Severe enough to take 3 preventive inhalers, nasal spray and singulair and alegra. I started working out in my garage with my own little circuit training set up. I take a nebulizer treatment before workouts to help with breathing. I see some great advice here. I hope that my asthma will become more controlled with weight loss. I am about 50 pounds overweight and have lived a very sedentary life for the past few years.

I didn't notice any health related questions when I filled out my profile. I have asthma as well and need a customized program.
