I was doing cardio today on the treadmill and my left side started hurting and my chest got very tight. I use to smoke, could that be the reason why my chest got tight? And if I drink more water and eat more would that make the pain in my side go away?

try taking a few deep breaths when you feel this pain.. you may not be breathing properly. ive experienced similar probs, and find it subsides after that. could also be cramps from drinking too much water while running, eating too much before, etc.

I thought it was the way I was breathing also so I did take deep breaths and nothing happened. I don't know about the too much water thing(I don't think I drink enough water) but I waited about an hour and a half to two hours after I ate before I got on the treadmill. So you are saying it could be just about anything?

if my logic is correct, due to your past history of smoking, your bronchi and bronchioles are probably constricted (carry air in and out of the lungs). when you are breathing, you are getting a restricted flow of air in and out of your lungs, hence, your body has to work harder for your breaths. this could be the reasoning behind your chest tightness.
if im right in what i said above, sticking to a more healthy lifestyle will inevitably reverse this process somewhat. stopping smoking and continuing a regular exercise regimen should help open up your lungs and undue some of the damage you've caused.
sometimes i get the symptoms you are exhibiting, and i just fight through them. but i would suggest that if they are very debilitating, that you either decrease the intensity, stop completely, or get a medical opinion.

Chest pain... see your doctor.
Side pain - could be lack of oxygen, could be lack of glucose in your system.

I don't get this during cardio...but I do get it jogging (not on a treadmill). Mine are just cramps and can be painful and simulate a tightening of the chest. Make sure you're getting plenty of potassium...grab ya a banana if you don't already eat a few during the week. Seems to help mine.

Thank you everybody. I have an appointment to see my family doctor tomorrow (for a different reason) so while I'm there I will tell her about it. Thanks again.

keep us posted on what the doc says. sounds like side cramps to me, however if they are high in the rib cage you need to get a professional's opinion.

My doctor said it may have been too hot, therefore I wasn't getting enough oxygen and that's why my chest got really tight. Who'd a thunk it? I'm a dork.
