see...this is why I went crazy in college. taking philosophy as a major definitely screws with your mind. and most of it isn't in a good way.
>>Statement: Women (in American culture) are valued NOT
>>for their sexual experience, but for their "innocence."
>>The act of sexual intercourse with a man is seen as
>>damaging to a woman in most contexts.
In the context of morality, this is so. But we have to admit, morality can't be pinned down, and as times change so do our moral standards. There are a gazillion shades of gray in that subject. The problem with most people, is that they fail to understand that ==morality needs to be grounded with reality==. Whether we like to admit it or not this is where all this gets messed up. This is why morality is always subjective.
This is why no one can ever justify why prostitution needs to be made legal OR illegal.
>>Taken to a finer point, some feminists argue that sex, >>mercenary or not, pollutes women.
That would depend on which school of philosophy you guys are appealing to. Analytic philosophy would just tell you that sex is a natural act, it is a necessity dictated by our bodies. Eat, drink, have sex and be merry...there is no such this as pollution when it comes to sex.
On moral grounds however, everything is subjective and ought to be seen according to the situation etc. But even morality will not be as bold to say that sex pollutes women.
The statement is based yet again on that damnable double standard. Any feminist who poses that statement needs to review her lessons as well as revisit the very reason for feminism.
If sex pollutes women, then it should rightly follow that it pollutes men as well. This is not so, because if it is indeed, then sex in all respects, in all aspects of the dirty deed should and ought to be considered taboo. Heck even the fathers of christianity do not go against sex, and the basic act thereof. Look in the bible, there's a passage there about husband and wives, and the things that go with that. Look at the kama sutra , and unless you're a priest or a monk, then sex doesn't even come into morality.
This is why I went nuts in college. Personally, I'm with the analytical philosophers..eat, drink, have nookie and be merry. Cheers!
-------------- The only way to defeat fear is to treat it with respect. Take it by the horns, stare deep into it's eyes, analyze it and overcome the ugly bastard.
Now for the love of god...put the donut...DOWN!!!
