I was determined to make some lowfat tostadas this weekend and went on a shopping trip. While reading a dozen labels in the meat department I found that Farmer John's Extra Lean Ground Pork had less fat and calories and more protein, per 4 oz svg, than any of the ground turkey or lean ground beef (93% was the leanest available at Safeway). So that is what I used. I never see anyone here talk about eating pork and was wondering if there is a hidden reason. BTW I ended up with 2 fully loaded tostadas at 347.5 cal, 38 carbs, 27g protein, and 10g fat. That is for both not each. It certainly satisfied my craving for Mexican without blowing my diet!

I just prefer not to eat pork. I guess that I have the mind set that pork is fattening and bad for you. I do not eat beef either for that reason...whne I fo mexican or even feel like a hamburger I use ground turkey or chicken...To me it is all in my state of mind

I was going for turkey, but what I saw had more fat and cals which was surprising. I too always think pork is bad, even though I love it. That's why I was wondering what others thought, or knew.

I think pork has that bad rap because of like what greenlee said. We tend to associate pigs with garbage scavengers, etc, and the first thing we think of with pork is bacon and ham! A good, center cut, boneless pork loin is actually a pretty lean cut of meat. And they now have available 4% ground beef as well. Also, try experimenting with other meats such as buffalo (damn yummy!)... With all meats, fowl included, you will find that it's not so much the animal that matters, but more of the cut of meat. I mean, can you believe that 30% ground beef and filet mignon comes from the same animal??

Of course, with me, as long as it was an herbivore, it will probably end up in my oven..... LOL!

Even bacon was a surprise, it has 3g of fat and the turkey bacon has 2.5 per slice and they both had 35cals and 2g of protein. Not much of a difference.

I eat pork a lot - also bison, here's a recipe I found online for:

Bison burgers

1 egg
2 tsp worcestshire sauce
1 t dry mustard
1 t salt
1/2 t cayenne pepper
1/2 cup minced onion
2 lb ground bison

I made these the other night, cooked them in a pan and my hb thought they were better than the usual grilled beef burgers we make.

I eat pork very often.
As Rev stated, it's reputation has a bad rap, you don't even have to over cook it anymore to make sure it is safe.
The feeding etc has really changed since the late 80's.
It is a really good source pf protein.
