Is the difference between a Dumbell Shoulder Press and a Dumbell Military Press the width of the Dbs at the top?

You can get a more natrual range of motion with the dumb bells and each arm/shoulder has to really do it's own work.
I think it is useful to include both in your ahoulder routine. -------------- Never, never, never, never give up. - Winston Churchill |

I am under the impression that a military press is standing (Military posture). -------------- Iron and chalk. Pain is only temporary, it is in your mind. If you can still walk, then you can still run. |

Yeah, I do militaries all the time. Just wondering by his wording what exactly he was differentiating between the two. I guess one is seated, was hoping he would clarify.

Gotta go with bb1 and say DB presses are done in a seated position. Beyond that I gotta go with wrestler where military would mean upright, or standing. Mainly beacause I can think of at least one other instance where people refer to the military position as a "length wise form"...all be it, lying down.-------------- Seize the day! |

What I was feeding towards asking here is "What are the disadvantages/advantages of pushing the Dbs wide above your head rather than pushing them together above your head?" I gather it works your shoulders more if your pushing to a wider position.......

Pushing "inward" Would bring the pec minor/upper pec into it a lil more...while pushing straight above would keep all emphasis on the shoulder....I think-------------- Get your bicep curling, cut off shirt, matching workout outfit wearing, flexing in mirror "toned" wanna-be ass , out of my squat rack! F.T. shows the Military Press as SITTING. F.T. also shows D.B. presses as Sitting. I suspect they are the same unless standing D.B. Presses is the Excercise. Military Presses are mostly done with a bar and not D.B.'s. For what it's Worth I am not an expert.-------------- "Do the right Things" and "Do Things Right". You will succeed. |

The military press was the original press in the olympics. Contestants had to keep an upright posture (Military style) and were not even originally allowed to move their head out of the way. Instead, to keep this military posture, they were required to press the bar AROUND their head. Eventually the rule was rewritten to allow SLIGHT deviation, and the Russian's took this to mean they could press from an arch.
Do you really think that they would have a seated lift in the olympics? -------------- Iron and chalk. Pain is only temporary, it is in your mind. If you can still walk, then you can still run. |

Yes, there is a difference, hence my question early on in the thread. Good post again wrestler.
