So I need to start one of my famous Journals here. Still want to lift heavy to become Strong Like Bull. But at 39 I need to look ahead. I am stronger than I was at 30, but I have added extra weight. SO here goes:
1-15-10 weight 260 Goal-235 Net weight to lose-25lbs Time frame-June 2010 Plan of action-Over next 2 weeks phase out all crap foods. Add in walking, till 2nd week of Feb. Weight training will be in the 6-10 rep range. Hope to see some people follow this and give some useful comments. -------------- FOR MY WIFE: Her little ring was a little thing but it was all that i could afford now shes mine all mine till the day i die and i never wanted nothing more 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

Is walking enough cardio to raise your heart rate to burn the calories.
All the best to you! |

I hope you have a good cardio workout planned. I don't think walking is gonna get the heart rate up high enough unless you pick up the pace and keep it going.. I would suggest a stationary bike for bad knees.. How to put this... go for endurance.. to get those muscles to burn more calories you need to sustain for longer periods of time.. that's what I think..
but lastly and most importantly.. is diet.. if you think it's wrong then it must be.. |

Never underestimate the power of a good walk. We as humans don't walk anywhere near enough.
It's not just about getting the heart rate up, but it's also preparing the body for any cardio. We are supposed to take around 10,000 steps a day. In todays society, it's not entirely unlikely we reach a tenth of that. Walking can be good cardio, help drop body fat and lead a person towards more intense cardio activity. -------------- I see the words you are typing, but all I read is *click*click*click* Fat loss isn?t under the control of the magic fat loss fairies. - Alwyn Cosgrove |

Walking burns calories just like any other physical activity. Maybe not as many but at the end of the day it's always calories in vs. calories out.

tue night I went in for legs. I got to my set of 405x1...this went well I was set to try 425 and might have hit 455. the daycare lady came in Jack was cryin I had to go home. At that point my left knee was tight by wed morning I could not use it at all. AS a kid I had http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cy...nee/osgood.htm
this is the area that was swollen. I was sent to a ortho. Here is the news. I was told the left kneecap is rubbing bone on bone. she told me squats are totaly not to be done ever. THEN tells me that 45 degree is as deep as I can get. also that leg extensions are the best for me WTF am I to do without squats in my life -------------- FOR MY WIFE: THE HIGH COST OF LIVING AINT NOTHING COMPARED TO THE COST OF LIVING HIGH. 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

I would find a sports ortho, or at least a better PT. I say better, because if your ortho understood how the patella tracks during a squat as opposed to a leg extension, there is very little chance she'd tell you leg extensions were a viable alternative. USUALLY with patella based impairments, compression isn't the problem.
Patella on bone could be anything from basic adhesion to osteoarthritis. If it was severe enough that you could never squat again, you probably never would have made it to a 425lb squat in the first place. Now obviously I could be wrong, but I'd still get that second opinion from someone more qualified. If you ARE cleared for exercise, this is going to change how you train for life, not simply a few weeks. I'd suggest some quality knee sleeves (tommy kono or rehband) to keep the joint warm and compressed, and look into exercise selection. Athletes with knee pain typically have good results with posterior chain biased training programs (think deadlift-centric). As far as squatting, in order of stress on the patella, least to greatest: Reverse band box squats Reverse Band Squats Stability box squats (hanging chains) Wide stance box squats and so on into the more stressful forms of squatting. Accomidating resistance (bands + chains) will be your friend since they take the stress off the bottom portion of the lift. The reverse band will probably be your best bet for a regular variation. FWIW, Big Iron Gym, one of the top PL teams in the world, uses a lot of reverse band squats, more than any other variation. |
