I want to start building muscle and I heard that I should eat a gram of protein for every pound that I weigh. I weigh 173. How and where do I get 173 grams of protein a day and what is the best protein to be getting. I heard that whey is the best for women.

Marcy there are a lot of different foods in which protein can be assumed in the nutrition food list located here on the website. My personal favorites though are, lowfat cottage cheese, eggs, lean steak, chicken, tuna and salmon. Whey protein is really good cause it penetrates faster to your muscles than any protein out there. You can also look at protein bars and drinks for supplements, if you are on a low budget, Walmart carries a good variety of supplements at a reasonable cost. Hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else. Good Luck!

5 meals equally divided will give you easily the amount of protein you desire. Meal 1..1 cup cottage cheese, 4 eggwhites, 1/2 cup oatmeal...Meal 2...Protein drink(25-35gr.), Meal 3...6 oz. turkey breast, chicken breast, tuna, 2 cups vegetables...meal4....Protein drink....Meal 5...8oz. fish or other lean meat, 6 oz. sweet potato, 2 cups salad, or vegetables. Very easily your protein requirements and then some. Adjust to your calorie needs for your bodyweight. This is just an example, but a good one.

To clarify meal 3, not all 3 meats. Your choice of one of the three,or any lean meat. Or even 6 eggwhites if you prefer with some omlette vegetables.

There are several different kinds of protein - whey, egg, casein, soy and animal are how I usually break it up. Whey is optimal for post workout, when you want protein to hit your system quickly and don't mind a loss of assimilation. You want to stick to slower digesting proteins the rest of the day in order to make sure you soak up as much as possible. Any of the above proteins are good, none are really specific for women (except maybe soy, but there's controversy about that applying more to men than women). The easiest way to get protein is simply to eat the foods that the other folks mentioned - lean meats, cottage cheese, eggs, tuna and other fish, etc. Supplement with an MRP or some whey mixed with some sort of fat source (natural PB is usually perfect for this - blended of course) if you need more.
