Protein drinks are just supplements, if you're not getting enough protein from regular foods then that's when you need them. Protein is important because it builds muscle. Most people trying to build muscle take in 1-2g/lb bodyweight and that's why many of these people need the supplement.

You need to find out how many grams of proteins you need daily. Now if you can get all the proteins from real food, then you don't need protein powder.
Easy as that.

A protein drink is always good post workout when your muscles need something quick. A good fast pure whey can suffice here. A whole food meal will not do you as much good here due to slower digestion. Other than that, as Philia says, figure out your protein needs. If you can gnaw your way through the needed amount, then you don't need one.
