Protein intake?

I read that you are supposed to have 1 gram of protein for every 2.2 pounds that you weigh. So if I weigh 140 pounds I should be taking in about 64 grams of protein a day, right? But when I check on my nurtritional goal analyzer (and my nutritional profile) it says I'm supposed to have 140 pounds of protein a day which is equal to 1 gram of protein for every 1 pound. Why the discrepancy? The rest says 270 carbohydrates, 1789 calories and 23 fat. Are the rest of these right? Also, although I try to work out at least three times a week I'm pretty sure I'm not working out hard enough to need twice the amount of protein (if this is the case). So what should I do? Take in 64 or 140 grams of protein per day?

140 pounds of protein per day is about right for my buddy Beelzabubba Buffalo.

Most folks here agree on 1 to 1 1/2 grams per pound of bodyweight. There are all kinds of schools of thought here. I aim for 1 gram per pound.

Thanks but that still seems like too much for me. I think I have to stick to somewhere in between.

140lbs of protein, thats alot of cottage cheese.

go to basalmetabcalc.com and check out your details there.. You will get a better understanding of how and why you feel it's inconsistent... for instance with myself my basal metab calculations show;
i need about 1760 calories a day just to live and must have 49 grams of protein to keep my muscle intact.
to lose weight i have to eat 1200 calories as a minimum but do need to be sensible and keep it below 1760 and do a bit of exercise, keeping protein above 49g.
to maintain my muscle mass and not put on weight and given i train 4 times a week- i can consume 2800 calories without weight gain and can eat 80g of protein. I can eat 160 even 200g of protein to bulk up.

So anyway, with exercise i can consume a cake and not worry. Given 2800 calories of a balanced diet- that's alot of food. To gain weight I need to pig out... or stop the exercice and eat 2800 still and probably gain 2 or 3 pound a week or more.
I judge that a lot of exercise every day and eat 1500 calories loses me a pound a week.

I hope how i've set the scene and once you've hit the web page you'll see that you can assess yourself and the figures given- i always feel freetrainers report for weight maintenance is about 200 calories too high and probably because we are all less busy in the gym than we think we are

I would strongly disagree with that unless you don't have any muscle to speak of. Better double check the validity of that site. If you are training at all, 49 gr. of protein will not only not keep your muscle, but you will be losing what you do have.
