I've never used protein powder, so I went to the sotre to get some and there were whey, soy, and eggwhite. How do I know which one is for me? My goal is weight loss (fat loss).

Honestly, given the apparent variety, there really isn't much difference in your protein powders. Honestly, almost anyone will do, the real issue you should consider is flavor and a respectable brand name.-------------- "Don't follow leaders and watch your parking meters!" -- Bob Dylan |

Whey is by far the most used on this site and by most everyone I know. It enters the system fast. I used it when I was on my weight loss program and it worked great.-------------- Lisa Just laugh about it.... |

All are complete sources of protein; naturally egg whites give the best ratio of amino acids but after processing most whey products are better than that. I personally use soy for various personal reasons. The differences in which you chose are slight however there are other factors you need to consider.
Firstly taste – finding one you like (or at least don’t hate) the taste of, I prefer ones without any flavourings so I can add my own but everyone’s different. Also look at the other ingredients. Firstly make sure it is a protein-powder not a weight gain powder (the number of calories should make this clear). Secondly look for sweeteners; both simple sugars and artificial sweeteners (aspartame) are commonly used. Protein is best digested with some carb’s, but you should avoid simple sugars, especially if you are trying to lose fat. I also prefer the freedom to add whatever I want (though I normally add banana as it give flavour, electrolytes and complex carbs). And aspartame has been linked to giving carb cravings, also why try to keep fit and eat healthy then take in unnecessary chemical. Finally if you don’t have access to a blender will it mix? Some do most don’t – I use a little hand blender fairly cheap and worth every penny. |

hi erirvine...juz wanna ask something...most of the protein powders i see on sale contain aspartame...and ive read that it is actually quite toxic (dunno how much of that is true) in fact the protein im using "EAS precision protein" contains aspartame.
So if it is so dangerous what other alternatives would u suggest bcoz if the powder used simple sugars then it would hinder fat loss as u said? Ive read from other members that aspartame is something that we consume naturally anyway juz like creatine...hence it is safe...kinda condusing dun u think |

yes, brabohue, aspartame is a form of aspartic acid, which of course is an amino acid. Once again, it is all media hype about the negative effects of aspartame. Unless you stop eating all together, we all consume this on a regular basis. The only people that need to worry are those with PKU, and trust me when I say that this is not the most common of diseases.

Hey,
I must admit to not been a total expert to the effects of aspartame and dahayz is perfectly correct that we take it in normal life anyway. However by taking products with it in we will boost the amount we take in and this could lead to unwanted side effects (I stress could because I have no real proof as to what levels cause what effects). As for it been natural there for it’s safe, just because something is taken in small doses naturally dose not mean increasing our exposure artificially will have no effects. Naturally we are bombarded by radiation, but given the option of radioactive or non-radioactive protein powder I know I would choose the non-radioactive one. However media hype dose have a tendency to go hysterical because they don’t understand the facts, or they can misrepresent them for profit. If I were you I would not waste the powder you have at the moment and use as normal. If you were then worried then buy a pure protein powder next time, just read the ingredients in the shop. However it is not a major hang up – I still drink diet coke, which contains loads of artificial chemicals when I go out drinking with my friends. In short don’t worry too much. ED! |

PS I should stress that was an analogy I did not mean to sound like I am comparing aspartame to radiation.

I agree with you 100% erirvine. It's to hard and to much of a waste of time to worry about EVERYTHING. I to drink a lot of diet pepsi(great diuretic), and I am not worried at all. When you realize that something bad could happen to any one of us at any moment, it seems pointless to worry about consuming something so miniscule such as aspartame. Besides, the air we breath is more hazerdous than aspartame, and well, we can't really stop breathing, so, oh well.

I, personally, avoid aspartame when possible. I figure everything counts. I might as well eliminate any potential toxin possible when I have the chance.
I've heard a similar arguement about Myoplex - that it ONLY has one gram of trans fat. Okay, sure, it's only one gram, but that's one gram more than if I don't drink it at all. I'm not really making any big compromises by not taking Myoplex or a powder with aspartame in it, so I might as well not take in those ingredients. -------------- "Don't follow leaders and watch your parking meters!" -- Bob Dylan |

thanks a lot guys for the feedback...i do agree there will always be a lot of controversy on the aspartame issue judging on what ive read so far....heck ive even had a tough time convincing my medical lecturers that a high protein balanced diet is essential to athletes !! guess they are more in line with the old school of thought.
Now if i only can convince my gf that the protein powder im taking is harmless.....hehe |
