I have been taking protein shakes now for awhile, and ma very pleased with the results. It's led to significant muscle gain for me. However, I am pretty close to being as big as I want to be. So, my question is this:
If I stop taking the protein shakes, etc., and go back to a more normal diet, will I lose the muscle I earned? In other words, is the muscle I have now dependent on my increased protein levels? Or, will I be able to maintain it just by continuing working out?
Thanks in advance...

I don't believe I have ever seen this question posted before! Congratulations on reaching your goals. Not being smart, just serious. I am curious to find out the answer to your question.

The question is not whether to discontinue the shakes, but rather your total daily protein intake. You should maintain your daily protein intake of 1-1.5g per pound of bodyweight, whether or not you discontinue your shakes. As a weight trainer or athlete, your protein needs are much higher than a normal or sedentary individual.
Also, remember that you grow when you are at rest...not when you work out. Without protein (or not enough protein), your muscles won't be able to feed.
Hope this makes sense...

Okay, in response then, my question would be, if I keep my protein intake at 1 gram per 1 pound (which is where it is now), and continue to workout as I am, it seems to me I will continue to grow? I don't really want to get much bigger, but rather stay where I am. So, I guess what I'm asking is what's the best way for someone to strictly maintain the muscle they have?
