Hi all! I'm new to the board, and have a few questions about protein. I'm not currently taking any supplements. Should I be? I don't want to bulk up. Losing 20 lbs would be nice...but overall, I just want to tone up and look better (if the weight loss happens, great - if not, oh well).

I've started going to the gym every morning for my workouts (cardio and weights).

Do I need protein - and how much / when to take it?

FYI - Food: I eat cereal in the morning right after my workout, eat some fruit around 10am, for lunch - salad with FF dressing or tuna sandwich, carrot sticks around 2-3 and for dinner a chicken breast, rice and veggies. I don't eat before bed.

For just toning ur muscles u are pretty much on the right track....It looks like u will lose weight to.If u work out you will lose weight witout even noticing. For example I workout for about 1 1/2 hours a day.I already se great improvement and lost 3 pounds in 2 days eating regular meals.

Kj, the rule of thumb is to eat 1 to 1 1/2 grams of protein per pound of body weight per day. You may also want to add a whey protein supplement immediately post workout.

Thanks - I don't eat after dinner (I.e. not past 730). I workout for 30-45 minutes every morning... that's all I can fit in. I get to the gym when it opens at 6 and then have to go to work :)

KJ, unless you're a genetic marvel you won't bulk up. It's very difficult for a female to bulk. Fill out your profile. It helps us to help you and welcome here.

No problem, just remember so keep eating the same things don't eat healthy at one point then start eating high calorie meals again. Try to stay eating those low cal meals tht helps you in the long run.

Sounds good Robelgado. I'm pretty good at sticking to eating healthy. My biggest problem is I LOVE beer.... it's the hardest thing for me to cut back on - but I've pretty much limited myself to a few on weekends and that's it.

Charlie: I didn't mean bulk up like a guy, but where my ultimate goal is toning up / weight loss... I just didn't know how effective taking a supplement would be.
Maybe I'll try adding the supplement post workout Charlie :)

KJ, do a "fitbuddy" search on protein (at the bottom of the page) you'll find a gazillion posts on the subject.
Welcome to FT.
