Every shake has different purpose...
They are weight gainer, 0 carbs, cassein, whey, post work out shake, ...
Plain food is better than shake though, you won't gain fat if you eat the right amont of protein (2.2gr/kg. - 1 gr per pound) and if you train.
You won't get anything if you just drink shakes... And if you want to had some muscle, you ll have to eat more carbs and yeah you will gain some fat, then you cut :)
