Protein shakes pre/during/post workouts?

2007/03/25, 11:29 PM
Sorry I had trouble finding previous posts.
My husband says that protein shakes do nothing for you if taken before the workout. Any tips? Pro/cons of shakes before/after etc??
Thanks!

From what I have observed protein shakes are best taken as soon as you finish your workout as this is the best time for absortion.

There is some research that says the pre workout protein shake is more anabolic than the post workout. However, these studies do not indicate if anything was eaten prior in the day for instance, so of course, if you have an empty stomach the pre workout shake will show a high degree of anabolism.

If you have eaten at all during the day, chances are good you have some nourishment in your system, and a post workout shake will suffice.

Now a pre workout protein shake can be utilized...for instance, I go to the gym in the evening. Many times during the day I won't eat for 4 or more hours before my workout, so I come home, slam down a protein shake and usually a bit of candy(good sugars), and hit the gym.
