I have a simple question. Are supplements (protein) neccesary. I am working out so I can be fit and loose fat. I mostly want to gain strength but don't want bulk. I honestly just want to be strong without looking like one.

Protein is necessary! If you can get all your required protein through whole food, this is quite fine with the exception of post workout. You really need some whey here, a very fast acting protein can be crucial to your gains. Other than that time, if you can gnaw your way through enough protein to meet your needs, then so be it.

I read in a previous post that a whey shake and a banana would be good for post workout. Something about protein/carb combination. What do you think? Could you summarize the effects of the carb protein combination post workout? I read it before but I can't seem to find it. Thanks

I copied this from another post I made to save myself some typing! LOL...anyway, this sums it up, drop the banana.
You do not want fructose though. You want simple sugars. Fructose tops off liver glycogen, which does us no good. We want muscle glycogen restored. Simple sugars work best here, a mixture of dextrose and maltodextrin is the best. Dextrose is very fast absorbing, and will blunt cortisol with insulin. Maltodextrin is also very fast, but a tad bit slower, so it will be coming right behind the dextrose. This will drive nutrients right into the muscle tissue, with the push of insulin, unlike fructose. Drink half of your shake immediately to give a good insulin surge to shut off the cortisol, then sip on the rest for about 45 minutes to regulate insulin/blood sugars. You should make your shake as to your workout intensity. A good place to start is if you are trying to gain, take 1/4 your bodyweight and divide that in equal doses of dextrose and malto. Also 1/4 your bodyweight in protein. Mix up, and drink as mentioned above. Adjust your dose if needed for the intensity of your workout. For instance, when I work just one bodypart, I may only use half as much dextrose/malto, but always keep my protein the same. If you are trying to lose weight(fat), then cut your dextrose/malto in half, keep your protein the same, and consume in the same manner as above.

Thanks. I think I'm going to start a file and save this stuff. I'll search the boards for more info on dextro/malto, where you find it and such.

I never reach the protein level in my nutrition program without exceeding the level of fats recommended. Do I need to take some whey protein too?

I'm not trying to gain too much muscle, just tone up. I've started to take aminoacids and was thinking about adding some protein supplements too. Is this a good idea??

That's what I had to do since I am having to really watch my cholesterol. I believe thats the purpose of the protein mixes. However, as you can see from the above posts there is an art to taking the powders in order to get the maximum benefits. Also, you mix it differently according to your goals, time of day, etc. I have also read some medical research that suggests that protein supplementation is just plain good for you. Lots of info on this subject on the boards. On the other hand, do you like tuna, chicken, lean beef, etc.

I asked my doctor about protein supplements he said that all they do is screw up your liver and your kidneys, and are not worth it.

I had heard that studies had been performed which showed those types of results but the studies were not performed on people involved in weight training or who were watching their diets. Many had previous health problems. Of course, you can overdo anything. I believe that if you are in reasonably good health (no kidney or liver problems), engage in weight training, eat a healthy diet, and use the supplement wisely (based on proven methods) you should be alright. Plus protein supplements have helped many people make tremendous gains. Remember it is only a supplement and you are trying to hit a set amount. As stated above if you can reach your target amount of protein through food that's fine. Many folks can't so they supplement. Just my opinion though.
