Hello All,
I am first time poster, but long time weightlifter who has most recently become serious about his diet. I have, by the permutations of genetics, the ability to eat a lot of junk food and see little to no effects on the way I look. The only side effects other than the inordinate amount of inner-problems I may be causing is a lack of strength. Recently I resigned to begin eating healthy, treating myself to the sweet and salty treats I crave on those days labeled "treat days."
I have, like many of you here, a full-life outside of the gym. I find it hard to retain meal consistency (sometimes I can eat a well managed breakfast, other times there is no time). However, protein shakes such as mesotech, myoplex, met-rx, nitro-tech, and any other tech-derivative you can think of has provided me with the most convenient avenue of protein intake.
This message board has provided a great deal of information, misinformation and opinion on the topic of protein shakes vs. protein from fish, meat and poultry. But the question remains: While it is obvious that no one needs protein shakes since protein is readily available in all of the aforementioned sources, is the converse true? Is it possible to derive the required protein, as long as an effective carbs to protein ratio is maintained, from the shakes, along with moderate meals consisting of small amounts of tuna, chicken or beef? Furthermore, what are the side effects of such a system?
I would appreciate any information that anyone could provide. Sources are greatly appreciated. I know I don't need them like ice_man so readily points out, but need does not address systemic-effectiveness. If it is indeed still protein, what is the difference? Simply stating that you don’t need it is not an effective method of proof of its inadequacy.
Thanks again.
