Protein/carb drink throughout workout?

would there be any benefit or drawback to drinking a protein/carb shake throughout your workout? I know that post workout is essential, but would having one during the workout as well help energy levels and available protein at the conclusion of the session?

The carbs(probably being simple sugars) may cause indegestion. Plus, it may well divert blood flow from muscle to digestion.
