i recently bought some dextrose by NOW which came in a bag-- my mother decided to put this dextrose into a tupperware container. The only problem is that we have another tupperware container that looks exactly the same that holds the regular sugar used for coffee. How do i tell which container has the dextrose and which one has the sugar? Ive examined the two containers and i noticed the sugar in one is grainy and does not stick to my finger if i dip it in. The other sugar is very powdery and sticks to my finger if i dip it in. I am extrememly parnoid as i do not know which is which and would appreciate if anyone could put my mind at ease.

I don't know what dextrose looks like but regular sugar used for baking etc. is usually grainy...

The dextrose is powdery. Is there some reason you can't just ask yo mama? or taste it? Nobody could put your mind at ease. -------------- Dyslexics of the world...UNTIE!!!!!! Charlie | |

Dextrose is much finer than sugar in texture.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

taste it!!!! mix like 1 cup of it with water, and see if it's really sweet like sugar , that means it is the sugar. :)

Don't mix a cup of it into water and taste it. That would be nonsense and you risk consuming a whole cup of sugar. According to bb1fit and Charlie, the dextrose is the one with the powderly like texture. I don't know the difference between the taste of the two but go ahead and taste it. I'm sure there will be a great difference.

FYI:
Dextrose is also known as corn sugar. It is 80%-70% as sweet as sucrose (table sugar). Dextrose is absorbed and utilized quickly, providing a rapid energy source, as it is a simple carbohydrate. Dextrose in more detail Dextrose is highly soluble in water, mixes with a fork and is very sweet so it is an excellent addition to a formula or consumed on its own. It also contains no fructose or lactose. Due to its ultra fine properties of Dextrose it increases the mixability of other ingredients when added with them. Therefore, it would be the fine powdery one....If you want to really know for sure send me a sample and I'll put it in my electron microscope and determine once and for all....or maybe I'd just taste it! |

Need, probably cheeper to chuck out what you have, both sugar and Dextrose, than to try and send me a sample over the border:big_smile:. Besides, customs never looks kindly at white powders crossing the border (assuming your in the US, please fill out your profile). If you want to check it out yourself, go to your local high school or primary school and have a look at it under an microscope-even a magnifying glass would probably due. The sugar will have a nice cubic shape, the dextrose much smaller.
Charlie...sorry no DNA testing here..materials science only..you'll just have to accept him as family until otherwise proven:) |
