hi i recently purchased some costco protein called R and L ralph and laura i believe it is very cheap and it delviers 16 grams per serving of protein the tub has 50 servings and it costs me only 22 dollars candadian this is incredible as oppsossed to the ridiculous prices at GNC. Has anyone ever taken this protein i mean does it work or is it too good to be true...one of my friends says protein is protein, while another says that i need stuff like glutamine and ribose in my protein for it to be fully effective, is this true or is this a good deal for this protein and does it work as effectively as other powders, money is really tight with school so if anyone can help me out i would really appreciate it.thanks |

First of all ribose and protein don't ever go together. Second, glutamine is occaisionally included in powders, but is not necessary. Generally speaking, protein is protein. OF course, you generally get what you pay for, too. The protein might be of a lower quality than others. Look at the label, if there is a percentage of RDA across from the protein content then you know that you're getting full BV protein and any quality differences shouldn't make a huge difference. If not, you're likely wasting your money.-------------- "Don't follow leaders and watch your parking meters!" -- Bob Dylan |

I would not use a protien that has less than 20grms per serving. Thats just me. I like to have at least 40 per serving wich in turn is only 2 scoops. Also the fat and carb content is important depending on your goals.-------------- The trouble with jogging is that, by the time you realize you are not in shape for it, it is too far to walk back! Hi Arngrim, I also buy my protein powder at costco I use the Weber one 22g protein,1g fat, 14g carb. The cost is about 25$ Canadian. Aposed to 67$ for what I was paying at the Health food place protein was a little higher, and carb were lower. but the weber is clean not much crap you dont need flavors, dyes etc. Read the ingrediants on the R & L make sure its goog low fat low carb. Remember the better it tasts the more crap that is in it. My 2 cents -------------- Never be afraid to try something new. Us canadians are really getting burned on the supplement stuff anyway. Sempai I'm paying 45.00 now for a lousy 2lbs. The Weber one sounds interesting, except for the carbs! That would mean I would have to cut somewhere else! LOL.The one I use now has only 5 grams carbs 0 fat. -------------- The trouble with jogging is that, by the time you realize you are not in shape for it, it is too far to walk back! Franklin P. thanks guys i really appreciate ur input and the R and L protein has 1 gram of fat and 3 carbs per serving also i mix my protein powder with 1.5 scoops of this R and L, 1 egg, 1 355 ml glass of milk and 1/2 tbsp. of peanut butter and one banana and drink it after every workout this totals about 47 grams of protein and 450 calories im just curios is this too much to take in after a workout...i remember a guy at the ymca a bodybuilder telling me that i shouldnt mix stuff like this with my powder...to just take it with milk or water after a workout, and eat the other stuff like half an hour later...is this better or is it alrite to just make the shake with all the ingredients? am putting my body under a lot of stress by taking in this many calories in the form of a liquid by taking in this much...i weigh 175 lbs...and training for progressive gains... thanks |

I didn't know Costco had the stuff. The best regularly priced deal I have found is Optimum Nutrition's 100% Whey Protien which you should be able to find for $25-$30 for a 5 lbs. tub. It's 77 servings of 22 gr. of protien with only 3 gr. of carbs. I heard whey protein is good and soy protein is bad for guys because it has adverse effects on testosterone levels. After several years of using protein supplements, I have determined that the best protien is the one on sale. I try to keep an eye out for really good deals and then I stock up. As much as I hate GNC's, you can find some rare smoking deals. In all the Chicago GNC's about a year ago, they had their TwinLabs stuff at %75 percent or more off. I loaded up on Mega Whey Fuel protien mix and bought 6 $59 500 gram tubs of TwinLabs Glutamine Fuel for $14 each, which should last me two years. You got to be pretty diligent to catch stuff like that, or just plain lucky. I like low-carb protien, because it's easy to add carbs just by drinking fruit juice. For example, there is 30 grams of carbs in 8oz. of apple juice. Don't be fooled by marketing and advertising and whose protien has the most inside. Compare serving sizes and carbs/protien grams on the nutritional lable. I think Isopure boasts 40 grams of protien per serving in thier mix and Twinlabs boasts 44 grams of protien in thier "protein shake in a box" stuff, but if you compare serving size versus protein, it all comes out to be pretty much the same. If you have a 30 gram shake, you can't possibly have more then 28 or so grams of protien in it. Does that make sense here? One other thing I have learned is that your body can only absorb somewhere between 20-30 grams of protien per serving/meal, so it doesn't make sense to slam down a 44 gram protien beverage. It makes more sense to drink half now, and half later. I have also "heard" that taking some ginger root can allow absorption of larger amounts of protein, but I have no idea if that is true. I used to read and post regularly at www.fitnessboard.com (Sixpack, where are you man?:)and that's where I heard all of this stuff about protien absorption and I think most of it makes sense. I would welcome anyone elses opinions on this stuff whether you agree or disagree. I think I'll post this under a new heading to get a good discussion going. |

FYI:Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey - 22g per scoop x 77 scoops per tub = 1694g protein per tub / $30 per tub = 56.5g protein per dollar Cost co - 16g per scoop x 50 scoops per tub = 800g per tub / $22 per tub = 36.36g protein per dollar Sounds like you actually got ripped off. -------------- "Don't follow leaders and watch your parking meters!" -- Bob Dylan |

Sorry, that's Canadian $22 so it's more like $14.50 US.So that would be 800g per tub / $14.50 = 55g per dollar I got the optimum stuff for 1694g per tub / $25 = 66g per dollar Not that huge of a difference. I'd just make sure that the Costco stuff is whey protein and not Soy. I've read several articles that soy is fine for the ladies, but actually has a adverse affect on men's testosterone levels. |

Okay, let's take the question to the next level (Down)...I was at the health food store and saw "protein concentrate" for cheap. I ask the guy about it and he said it's whey protein.. So I'm trying it for a few days. I'm going back to the store tomorrow to ask if I can get the "ingredients" or a better description of the product... any suggestions? (Stupid me, I thought "pure whey concentrate was pure whey concentrate) You watch, I'll bet there's a bunch of crap and sugar in there...-------------- \\"Don\\'t worry about the pain, it\\'s just the feeling left behind when weakness leaves the body!\\" ~ Unknown |

There is a diffence in proteins if your goals is to add size a simple whey concentrate will do just fine especailly if your budget is tight. If you are looking to loose bodyfat weight and dont mind the extra bucks choose a more absorbable protein such as whey isolate there is a difference it is a higher grade protein. There is a new protein out now think its called GF Pro made by Ergopharm its actually a plasma based protein. In layman's terms dried sanitized cows blood lol just doesnt sound that appealing to me. Who knows, probably can learn more about it on their website. I heard it doesnt mix well.

So I asked for more info on "caloric breakdown" (on the health food store "whey protein concentrate") there appears to be A LOT of Lactose in there. Lactose is a sugar, right? I have to get more information from them. I hate having to dig for info from a vendor...
