Interesting question. I do both myself. I think the major obstacle to eating before depends on how soon before, i.e., to avoid any stomach cramps, etc. I personally eat a little something, or have a protein shake or bar about a 1/2 hour before I lift to sort of "charge" my system. However, I don't eat something substantial until after I lift for obvious reasons. First, the muscles need immediate protein and some carbs for recovery and second, I usually rest (no activities) after lifting which allows for easier digesting.
This may be more of a preference thing Jerkwin, depending on what works for you. I like to feel a bit energetic before I lift therefore, I'll have something to eat before. The critical time however, in regards to your muscles, comes after you lift or workout.

Other thoughts ladies and gentlemen?

Well said dp, the only thing I would add to that is if you want, immediately before, even during warmups, it may be beneficial to sip on a protein/carb drink. Research has shown this can put you in as much an anabolic state as your post protein drink. Supplies aminos to your muscles while training when catabolism is occurring. I do this on a regular basis.

Good point bb1. The idea here is to maximize the body's potential to reap the most muscle gain as possible.

That'll work Jerkwin (where'd ya come up with the name? lol). What do you eat for breakfast before you go to the gym? Hopefully some protein is included in your breakfast, e.g., peanut butter, eggs, milk, etc.. Again, I don't see any problems with eating before as long as your stomach doesn't scream at you. I'm assuming you hit the sack after your workout? If that's the case, make sure you have some whey protein before sleeping and perhaps some casein protein (longer lasting protein so to speak) before nighty night.

I worked 3rd shift for 10 years. What I always did was go home and go to bed, then when I got up, usually around 1 or 2, eat breakfast. Then an hour later mix up a protein drink and go to the gym. That way you don't rob yourself of nutrition on a daily basis after working out, you have all "day" to eat and replenish like a normal person. Hope this is of use to you, from an ex third shift veteran!!

Just about any good whey of your choice would suffice. Whey is good here due to the fact of the faster assimilation. I live 10 minutes from my gym. I usually start drinking mine on the way there, and am finishing it as I warm up.
