Hi ladies,
I’m studying the female apparel sizing standard for short/ petite women (4’11” – 5’3”). If you fall within this height range, I would really appreciate it if you would comments on my findings below. Note: The study was conducted based on the “misses” sizing standard of American apparel manufacturers. Ex. The Gap, Guess, Express, Bebe, etc. Findings were as followed. The majority of shorter women find that regular size clothing do not fit well due to one or all of the following fit issues. 1. The waist fits too tight. 2. The hip has too much room (gap in the back when sitting, funny looking fit on hip) 3. Bust/ Chest area is too tight. 4. For woven shirt, the shoulder is too big. 5. The pants rise has too much room. 6. Sleeve length is too long. 7. Torso length doesn’t fall in place. Thanks in advance for any comments you provide. If you have any comments regarding fit problems of petite size apparel please also feel free to comment. Thanks again. Sunny |

I am 5ft 3, and I find that clothing tends to be too tight in the chest and waist, as well as shoulders being "droopy".

Now this is a good idea! :)
Sorry I don't fit into your sizes........ In France they are actually started to change the standard sizes of all clothes. They have finally found out that we are not like 50 years ago! :surprised: -------------- - Nina :o) Les Victoires éternelles sont celles du coeur. www.nme-pro.com |

I'm 5'3" and the biggest issue I have with petite clothing is that the waists are too small and while the inseam area is good, the area from there, up, is too short. Shirts also have too short a sleeve length and not big enough in the bust area.
I select misses size clothing because too big is better than too small. I have a very small frame and am a size 8 with a 36C bust. Pants legs are too long, the butt is baggy, but the front is not baggy. Misses size shirts I have to buy in a large to accomodate my bust, so they are too big everywhere else. I spend most of my life in sweats or shorts. Good research project! -------------- Anni Never pet a burning dog. |

I'm 5'2 and a UK size 8 (which is a US size 4 I think), and don't often bother with petite ranges, mainly because there just isn't as much choice. I'd prefer to choose the clothes I like and then alter them as best I can myself. Have given up buying shirts - if they fit my shoulders, they tend to be too small to fit my bust and the buttons pop undone at the chest! I've tried petite trousers before and have found that the waists are too small and too high. Not a good look!
Anyway, all the best with your research! :) |

I am 5'3" and my biggest problem is finding pants that fit my thighs and are not to big around the hips. my waist is a size 6 or 8 but my thighs only fit into size 10 or 12. I have a really hard time buying pants. That is why I am running to decrease the size of my thighs so that I can buy pants. Sleeves are always too long inorder to fit my bust, and pant legs are also too long. I love lose fit skirts.
Isn't it great to be a woman, i don't think men have this many problems. |

I'm nearly 5'3" and I experience the opposite. Pants - particularly the jeans right now - fit too tight in the legs and the waist is too big. I feel like every time I sit I need to cover my back so my "crack" isn't hanging out!
I have a muscular build, but I guess I am the proverbial "pear" shape and it's frustrating. I guess there's always the relaxed fit jeans that "fit" but with their tapered leg look aren't that appealing... But my bigger problem lately with petite sizing is that being on the "tall" end of the scale, a lot of pants are too short. Anyone else notice that? As for the chest, I won't even go there as I barely have one! I'm fairly certain that's not the norm. |

I have the same problems (being 5'3) I tend to like heels so I like my pants long...inseam say...31. But yeppers - I wear ususally a 2-4 in the Gap stuff and sure enough some things don't fit the waist area as well and you get a gap up in the waist in some brands. I hate petite because ..I feel like I'm waiding in water. I unfortunately am short waisted so ta da...that is where the weight usually goes - bummer! SUCKS being this height!:(

I'm 5'2 and work in the fashion industry. I've actually never have tried on petite pants. I find that petite tops fit just a little too small but, the seams of small tops don't fall in the right places.
I live in the jr.'s department or just have the regular women's wear taken up at the hem. |

Hi all,
Thanks for all of your inputs, I think this will help a lot. This research came about because I'm very frustrated with finding clothes that fits. I'm 5'2" and I too live in Juniors, my sister is 4'10" has to buy girls size 14. What's Small, Medium, and Large anyways? Do you guys think it would be better if the apparel manufacturers assign sizes for tops and dresses based chest width rather than using numbers of symbols (S-M-L)? For instance, size 34 tops = bra sizes 32C-34B, etc. What do you think about a clothing line that specialized in stylish clothing just for short women? Sunny |

Not sure if you still need input...
I'm 5'2.5" (I know all you petites out there understand that 0.5" is important!) and find that the "short" length pants is sometimes a little too short. Regular pants are generally too long, but if I want to wear heels, I get those. Waists in the actual "petite" section of a department store seem to be tight. Not too many problems with tops. I'm pear-y shaped  Sunny, there is Petite Sophisticate - but they could use some competition! I bought my interview suits there b/c it was the only place that fit. They looked nice, but were really expensive. Their stuff is also a little more mature/for work. Kirby |

My suggestion would be to get a fit model who is petite but, not a 4 X 4. An average petite woman not the garment industry's 'ideal' petite.
An instructor I had in fashion school use to work for a designer who's ideal size 10 was short and pear shaped! Another thing you can do is compare the pattern made from an ideal fit model to an average petite woman and change your grading guidelines accordingly. |

i'm barely 5'3" and its IMPOSSIBLE to find pants/capris that fit (i have really short legs and a longer torso). i only need petite pants (plus the rise is always too high), regular shirts are fine. i have crazy long arms tho so i always haveta go up to a medium that sucks.
gap sizes dont fit me AT ALL. jacob is good for shirts, bootlegger shirts are too tiny but the pants fit fine, and garage clothing is decent for pants/shirts. i will always haveta hem pants. no fair. i wonder if you have any of those stores in america. |

Hey, good ques!
I'm 4'10" and I have to get all my pants hemed. It's awful! Also, until the production, or at least till I found out aboutlow-rider pants, all pants came way too high on my stomach. It made me look like I had no torso whatsoever. If the waist fit, then there was some extra pants around my thighs and butt that just looked too hilarious. |

Im 5 feet tall and I have problems buying shirts more often than I do pants. Sometimes the sleeves can be too long. If I buy a small then the shirt can be too tight and I shove myself into it and have to cut it off with a pair of scissors before I really get the chance to wear it. If I buy a medium then the shirt is too large.
