When I am doing HIIT do I gauge the intensity level by my heart rate? For instance, for the steady pace do I go for a heart rate of 50% of the max and then 90% of max for the sprint cycle??? I'm confused!!!!

I gauge it by my perceived rate of exertion, easy, harder, all out, that kind of thing. But you could do it by heart rate, it is just harder to keep track of when you are all out sprinting.

The point on HIIT is just at intervals to go all out. Doesn't matter what your heart rate is. Just go all out at your chosen intervals, less active rest as you get more highly trained.
