You don't need to do HIIT for an hour. Go 20 min. tops with HIIT. It is very intense, the reason it is so effective because it has an anerobic as well as aerobic component to it, and will raise your baseline metabolism for the day, not just while you are doing it, thus you burn more fat.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... |

in answer to the bike or treadmill, the treadmill burns more calories and gives you a better workout than a bike because it activates more muscle groups-------------- "I get up in the morning around six to run for about an hour. A blend of different machines is better your body will get used to just treadmill work outs. Good luck - Mike-------------- I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. treadmil...but, the one that really burns more fat is the one you will enjoy the most; hence, you'll use it as often as you are suppose to.

HIIT... sum it up like this... go along at a steady pace for about a minute.. then go hard for about a minute... do that for 20 minutes... some suggest 30 seconds/30 seconds... or 2 minutes at a heavy pace and a minute at a heavier pace... do a search on HIIT... lots of info on it...
I believe you work your heart rate about 60% and then go hard to get it up to 80% or so.. I may be incorrect on the percentages, but that's it in a nutshell... -------------- Tim "I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies, for the hardest victory is over self." My boss's wife sees a personal trainer once a week. He has her on a regimine of 4 days cardio, 1 day lifting, for fat loss. She only has about 15 lbs left to lose(lost 30 already)and I was wondering if now would be the time for her to start adding in another day of lifting or not. Also, was wondering if seeing as how I have about 70lbs to lose, would concentrating on cardio and making lifting secondary until I lose 20-30lbs be a good idea?? Then add in extra days of lifting??

Cristalbelle -
You will lose more fat and get better results keeping your lifting regime up and maybe adding one more day of cardio than you are currently doing. 80% of your results will come from how/what you are eating - is your boss on a specific eating plan? She is getting great results - maybe her trainer is pushing her harder than she would push herself, or than you push yourself. Try increasing your weights when lifting - realy give it your all for 8-12 reps, and add a day of HIIT. drop some of your processed carbs, take another look at your calories - what kind of eating plan are you on right now?? -------------- "Achieving worthwhile goals requires a consistent investment of time and effort on your part....The rewards you receive will be in direct proportion to the consistent effort you put forth." Right now I am doing 3-5 days of cardio, and lifting 2-3 days each week doing all of the machines in our little apartment gym.
My eating consists of the healthiest things we can afford. Here is a typical day for my husband and I. Breakfast: coffee with fat free hazelnut cream eggs(scrambled I use 6 eggs, fried w/pam 2 for him and 1 for me) hashbrowns 2 patties for him 1 for me Lunch: Typically I don't eat lunch, because we can't afford for both of us to eat lunch. The day's I do I have a tunafish sandwich and an apple. Dinner: Turkey Tacos!! 2 flour tortillas filled with: Ground Turkey Brown Rice Lettuce(I like lettuce, and have about as much lettuce as ground turkey) Shredded Cheese Fat Free Sour cream Dinner we have a lot of variety, from tacos to chicken and dumplings, spaghetti with veggies and salad, accasionally buffalo with rice and veggies, grilled hamburgers and homemade beef stew. I would say that I deffinately get most of my calories from dinner. |

High Intesity Interval Training...
Basically, start slow for a bit to warm up, then go hard for about 20 to 30 seconds, then slow for about a minute, then hard again. This only needs to be done for 15 minutes or so. HIIT is simply a method to vary your heart rate from 'extreme' to resting at intervals of your choice. This can be done in any fashion you like, any cardio of your choice.-------------- Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten and be considered a good performer |

Hi all. When I do HIIT workouts on a treadmill, I use my HR monitor to tell me when to run hard and when to back off. TimDay mentioned the %'s of 60 and 80. I get my HR up to 65% of my maxHR, then I run hard until I hit 85%, then I walk until my HR drops back down to 65%, then I run hard again. The goal of my routine is to try and touch the top and bottom numbers as many times as you can in 20 minutes. As you train, you're able to cycle faster and faster b/c your body's anearobic threshhold starts to rise, which means that you're getting better and better at harvesting/using oxygen to metabolize fats, so at higher and higher intensities, your body is able to use fats to fuel itself longer and longer before switching over to lactic acid fermentation.
I started this routine in preparation for a high altitude wilderness backpacking trip in Colorado. I wanted my body to get better as using oxygen so that I wouldn't feel the altitude quite so severely. I felt great at 10,000-14,000 feet, but I can't rule out the placebo effect. -------------- \"We must be the change we wish to see in the world\" - Ghandi | |
