This may sound strange, but has anyone ever hurt their teeth by straining (grinding, clenching, whatever...) when lifting heavy?

One of the trainers at the gym where I work out wears a mouth guard for that very reason, as far as if this is strange, well, he is the only person I have ever met that does this.

I would find it hard to exhale when my teeth are clenched.

You make a good point rpacheo, and it's something I work on every day, making sure to exhale. Whatever I did, I spoke with a dentist today by phone, and belive it or not, I might need oral surgery! I also have heard of a few guys who wear mouthguards. I guess I'm not the only one.

I have never hurt myself, but have heard of it being done. In powerlifting events, most competitors wear mouth guards, especially with squats and deads.

Well, back from the dentist. I have an abcessed (sp?) tooth. It requires a root canal (oh joy, oh bliss...). This was NOT brought on by my clenching, it only sped up the process. So clench away! While breathing out through clenched teeth...

Yeah, for college football, the first day of 2 a days, we have to run THE HILL, and it was the toughest thing i had ever done, and after I was done, everything hurt even my teeth, they hurt pretty bad actually, and i dont think my teeth touch at all.
