This is mainly for BB1fit, but anyone else can jump in...
BB1fit posted about the problems that the Atkins diet causes etc, and I was just curious about a trial that was done called the Benoit et al trial.
This diet had controlled low carbs, and over 10 days, people lost 14.5 lbs of weight, and 14 of them were fat. How is that possible?

Well, first off that is a pretty astounding claim. I would think it rather impossible to lose 14.5 lbs. and 14 of it being fat. It is rather a well known result of any low carb diet to lose 6,8, even 10 lbs. the first week or so, but it is due to water weight loss. The Atkins diet has some sound logic behind it, but my problem with it is over the long term. Rebound weight gain is common. Thyroid function can decease along with metabolism due to excessive low carbs over a long period of time. Not to mention the problems that can arise from unregulated saturated fat intake.

I agree with you bb1fit. Also, many people that are overweight have known or unknown blood sugar problems. The Atkins diet, in the long term and short term, can negatively affect insulin production and regulation. I thought it was interesting that Barbara Walters had him on last night as one of the year's most fascinating people. I'm sure he will make a bunch of money around the new year with the increased exposure and everyone's "resolutions."

BB1Fit, If you hvae a chance, try to read up on that benoit et al trial. Type that into google , and information comes up. Pretty astounding. Hard to believe. I am curious what happened to those people after the 10 days.

It takes a 7500 calorie deficit to lose 1 kg of fat. Regardless of your hydration state (which will generally fluctuate on any diet), you've got to cause this deficit to generate permanent weight loss. There's absolutely no way to drop 14 pounds of adipose in 10 days, period. It is possible that h2o, muscle, and adipose losses could total that amount, but why would you want to do it that way? Stick to the basics if you want real, maintainable results.

Juice,
Go to google.com and type in Benoit et al trial.
Its an actual study that occured and this is what happened...14.5 lbs were dropped, and 14 of them were FAT. Now, I agree with you, its hard to believe, in fact I am very very skeptical...but research it and tell me what flaws you find with it because its very intriguing.

BB1fit, every diet you take for the first 6-10 days are water weight loss. If you have self-control and follow the plan, you can do it. The weak are what fall behind, and if they really wanted it ,they would be doing it, so right now, it may not be their time to lose weight, but eventually if they want it bad enough, they will see the changes that so many have so far.
