I had a new baby girl in Sept 2004, I gained 50 pounds while pregnant, but was about 20 pounds over my ideal weight before. I have been with FT since Oct 21st, and I have been weight training mostly and cardio a few days a week, or when I sneak in some time during the babys sleep.
I just want to note that I have lost 16 pounds, 4 in. from chest,3 inches off arms, 9 inches from my waist,6 inches from my hips, and 7 inches from my thighs. My goal is to lose 5 more inches from my waist and about 40 more pounds. But it's working and happy with the FT workout plan!
Now for my question, I have not taken any supplements or diet pills of any kind, but can someone please help me with what I should be taking to gain awesome muscle tone and definition. I heard glutamine, protein, creatine????? Please advise! Jewel

Protein and glutamine will be fine, I don't know that creatine will do you alot of good at this point.

What you really need to do unfortunately is keep tweaking your diet to keep the calorie deficit going to lose the rest of the baby weight gain first. As you lose this, if you are training with resistance, you will start to see muscle tone when the layers of fat are removed. Keep at it, you will do fine. The supplement world will not help you alot, most times simply make your purse lighter. Work on the diet first.

Thank you BB1, I try to go by the diet tracker on here for me, but cals seem like a lot, but I try to keep the proteins pretty high and the carbs I also try to keep low, and the fats as low as possible, I am eating the right foods and stay away from all garbage foods.I understand that eating 5 or 6 times a day is what I need to do, and that's what I do, just chicken breasts, cottage cheese, and veggies, broccoli and such, is this ok, and the zone bars for a snack as well. I have protein, and glutamine, don't really know much about them,I have been reading up on them, and I think they would be the best for me, how many shakes should I have a day? I have 500mg tabs of glutamine, just once a day? or more?

Why don't you post a typical days diet....and if you have it calorie amount(total will be fine). What time of day do you workout, and what type of workout do you do?

BB1, this is what I read that made me think I should be using creatine too, asimmer writes:
Can women use creatine?

"Women should avoid creatine. False.
As creatine, a natural substance found in foods such as fish and meat, doesn’t affect anabolic hormone function, women who train with intensity could benefit from creatine use. One study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that women could gain strength and reduce body fat with creatine use. In the study, 16 collegiate women lacrosse players loaded up with 20g of creatine and followed up with 2g for maintenance for a period of 5 weeks. At the end of the experiment, the creatine users significantly improved upper-body strength, while simultaneously decreasing the percent of body fat. The study also found no incidence of liver or kidney malfunction, as measured by blood metabolites during the five weeks. Since creatine doesn’t affect or alter anabolic hormone function, creatine won’t 'turn women into men.'”

Yes, creatine is good, I was referring to in my statement in my post that I wasn't sure if creatine is right for you yet,not sure what type of workouts you were doing, etc. If you are not doing any heavy resistance training to speak of, it will really do you no good.

Need to add, that I try to lift heavy...heavy for me that is. But if creatine will make me all bloated or something I don't want to use it.I only get about 1200 cals a day if that.

Looking at your current diet, I would say you are not eating enough! Your metabolic rate has probably slowed to compensate, and thus your fat burning mechanisms are not working.

BA is right, you need more veggies/fiber(basically the same with the right ones), but you need to ditch the bars for some real food.

What is your current bodyweight if you don't mind posting it?

BB1, At the present moment my weight is 168..I am losing about a pound a week now. I started out in Oct at 184lbs. I am 5'3.I am on the 4th week of my fitness program here, and 12 week ab program. I guess I am really messed up with my diet. I can't seem to get on target with the 2900 cals, and my protein intake, carbs and fat are never what they are suppose to be. Maybe you could give me a daily meal plan to go by..?? That would be really nice, and maybe set my day up for when to work out and when to take my protein and glutamine. It would at least give me something to go by. I am very serious about my weight lifting and weight loss. I have lost 110 pounds in the past twice after my other two children, but never seemed to be very healthy or muscular which this time, that is my goal. I lose weight pretty quickly, and my body is of medium build, and seem to get pretty muscular quickly, and have most always been into fitness, just every time I had a baby, I would gain 50 to 100lbs! Genetics I guess. Help me out! I am 38 years old and have a new born, must be able to keep up with her while she grows.I want to be in the best shape I have ever been in, hopefully by summer of 2005. Thank you in advance for your time. Jewel

I think that 2900 calories is way too high, and what you are doing is way too low. I would estimate your intake should be around 2012 calories. Now, do not just jump to that amount, as your body will be primed for fat storage from the calories you are now in taking, your metabolism has probably slowed to compensate for this calorie deficit. I would not worry too much about this though, as even in a starving person metabolic shutdown only is about 7-10%. So, slowly start bringing your calories up, not too fast as to prompt the body to “store”, even though the diet I am going to lay out for you will not really allow it(the foods involved). This is what I propose, first off with a morning workout.

Meal 1: Starchy/fibrous carb/protein
Workout
Meal 2: Protein shake with glutamine
Meal 3: Starchy/Fibrous carb/protein/fibrous veggies
Meal 4: Fibrous veggies/protein
Meal 5: Fibrous veggies/protein/fats
Meal 6: Fibrous veggies/protein/fats

Where for example meal 1 starchy fibrous carb would oatmeal. Your second fibrous carb as in meal 3 can be sweet potato or beans, black eyed peas (not pork and), and for your fats have flax oil or fish oils, even a few walnuts. Make your fats about 20 gr.-30 gr. Per meal which if you choose could be 2-3 tablets of flax oil or fish oil. You can sub something like salmon in your last 2 meals, and this would negate the flax oil addition. Hope this makes sense and helps. Your fibrous veggies should be normally leafy green or dark green veggies, like broccoli, asparagus, spinach, leafy dark green colorful salads.

Thank you so much BB1 for your time. That helps me a lot. Why does it say I should only get 39 grams a fat a day, and you are saying 20 to 30 grams a meal???? I will take your advise, just wanted to know if this much fat is correct. Thanks, Jewel

On a fat loss diet, as you cut carbs, you need to pick up some calories from elsewhere. Healthy fats are an ideal source here. No insulin rise, and healthy benefits including fat metabolism...and too many more to mention!
