I just finished week Three of my fitness plan. Through all the fumbling and grumbling, I have lost 7 pounds. I was frustrated because I wasn't seeing any results, but per the tape measure, I have lost 5.5 inches overall. I need to start a good diet plan though, I start off okay, but end up slipping. Can anyone help on how to stay motivated on your eating plan??

congrats on your success so far, great work. With your nutrition struggle, try looking at where and why you're slipping and set up a plan to help you keep on track. I know for me, I struggle on the weekends the most. So I conciously plan what and when i'm going to eat those days and do my very best to stick to it. I'm not always perfect with it, but I'm definetly better than I was. There's many threads on how to keep motivated, goal setting etc, try reading and implementing some of those ideas. Keep up the great work!

Good work! I think the eating part can be the toughest - we have so many emotional issues with food and we have to have it to survive, so we can't go cold turkey :)

When you do slip-up check a few things:

Did you have a good, healthy breakfast with complex carbs, protein and good fats? Not getting enough at breakfast has been proven to cause overeating later in the day. Your body needs a big, healthy, breakfast after fasting all night.

Are you eating enough calories for your metabolic needs? You want a slight deficit for weight loss, but you have to eat enough or your body will lsow your metabolism and it will also work on you to force you to head for the fridge.

Are you eating emotionally? Or are you actualy hungry? Keep a food journal and write out why you are eating as well as what you are eating - see if any patterns emerge. If you are eating because of hunger - you need more calories or more fiber. If you are eating emotionally you will have to deal with your issues in a new, more productive way.

And last but not least - remember you are human, this is your one life. You have to find the balance where you can let yourself have a treat once and a while without guilt. Once you have had your treat, put it away, no feeling bad about it, and move forward.

I found in my journey that people put to much emphasis on food. At my house our whole day centered around our meals, especially weekends. We would just finish having a BIG breakfast and start planning dinner. Inviting friends over to share that dinner with and always making to much food.

One thing I found that helps me is when I am shopping, I have a list that I follow and do not gaze shop like looking around at all the goodies. If the junk is not in my house I and my family will not eat it.
I stopped making our meals the focus of the day, now the focus is on a family walk or a game after a nice chicken salad.

I guess what I am trying to get across is, put the focus somewhere else in your life and make the food something you do to fuel your body. Something that worked for me, may not work for everyone.
