I just read on here that if you undereat and exercise you will not lose the fat , but lose muscle and keep the fat. My doc told me to do the atkins diet , thing , as it will lower my high blood pressure. I have followed it somewhat but not completely . my BP is coming down. I weigh about 170 , would like to lose about 15lbs of spare tire , and gain back the muscle i have lost , due to undereating/underexercising , to lose weight , have lost about 30 lbs since january.I have always been very muscular , naturally , nave never worked out before, just gained a spare tire .any suggestions ,where i should go from here?

I should add , I have been averaging eating around maybe 600 calories a day , except cookouts on weekends, I pig out then. I just started my program today to gain back muscle mass and will start tomorrow on abs workout.

You cannot live/at the least barely survive on 600 calories per day. This is no wonder you are losing muscle at an incredible rate. The body is trying to survive, and storing fat! Your metabolism must be at a crawl, thyroid output is something to watch out for here too. Be very careful, you need to eat.

I am in total agreement with bb1fit...I know because I did this also, throwing my body into survival mode - I lost 35 pounds and then gained it all back when I went back to "normal" eating. I lost muscle and didn't have anymore energy than when I was heavier. Good luck with your new program and awareness, and be patient, it may take a bit to let your body adjust, but it will. Make sure you are getting the protein to those muscles!

Yep, you will hear it all over these message boards. You have to feed your body what it needs to maintain its muscle and if you feed it the right kinds of food, you will actually gain lean muscle and that lean muscle is more efficient at burning fat, which will burn more fat. You will find that it is wierd to get used to eating more to lose fat (not weight per se because muscle weighs more than fat), but it does work. Gotta turn your body into a muscle building, fat burning machine.

Good Luck!

I have all the determination , and will power it will take . I just seem to want to do it all wrong , any advice is much appreciated , and will be taken to heart . thanks to you all very much. Rick

Hey dovesart!,

Welcome to ft! 600 calories! That is tough!
Okay - before we can help you we need to know -
How much you weigh
How often you workout
what you do when you workout, what kind of split, etc, what type of cardio
what you eat for those 600 calories..
You definitley need carbs. Many of my clients come to me on Atkins and once thay plateau on that we start adding in the good carbs, usually with great results. You have to find a diet and lifestyle you are comfortable with and can stick with.
:)

I weigh about 170 am 5'6" no fat but spare tire. I am just starting my program , to gain muscle . started monday ,on back and arms, tonight will be abs, 5 times a week total.also stepper , stationary bike and free weights.the 600 calories was at first 1 low fat microwave meal a day , plus a few bites here and there , like a hot dog , or something quick , no junkfood.now have been eating mostly low carb/no carb mostly veggies , some low fat meats.I drink iced tea or coffee, no alcohol, no soft drinks.havent done much all winter , butin summer, very active 16-18 hours a day. I normally cant sleep more than 6 hrs a day.I never worked out , or lifted weights , but on occasion , could bench press 200lbs , 6 reps, now havent tried but prob not much more than 150.I want to get back to where i used to be, I can and will with help , from you guys , Thanks very much Rick
