If I am trying to gain lean muscle mass, but lose some fat weight at the same time, does running defeat the purpose after a lifting session?, I've heard that it does. So say if I drink a protein shake, but run at night, do these just cancel out?

no, what u are doing is fine, as long as you dont overexert yourself. you should try and keep a moderate heart rate, not too high. what is usually recommended for people in your situation is a 20-30 light jog or inlined walk on the treadmill. the purpose of this is to target the excess fat in your body. just remember, that for the goals you mentioned, diet is probably more important than your workout...so eat minimal sugars and lots of protein and water. good luck

I think excessive cardio specific exercises can effect your ability to gain mass. I do a lot of cardio myself and haven't seen big gains but, I think it's a balance of getting sufficient rest and plenty of protein/nutrients to the muscles. If you go running let's say, right after weight lifting, you can effect the body's ability to start the healing process for the muscles you just worked. Most articles I read stress resting after a workout for at least a day. Again, if you get plenty of protein and balance your cardio workouts, you shouldn't have problems with gaining mass. Good luck.
