will probably be the one to help me with this topic. How can you improve your running speeds.. can you do this on a treadmill? -------------- Fitness - If it came in a bottle, everybody would have a great body. ~MIss AprIL |

Treadmills wont help too much with speed. Speed for the most part is genetic otherwise you have to work crazy hard to get a little faster. Why do u need to get faster? If your really bent on getting faster, you could invest in buying a speed chute or something.

Running speed will increase with foot speed or resistance training. You can either do foot speed drills, there are tons of those, or run with some kind of resistance. The most common types of resistance are running while pulling a parachute, or running while pulling a weighted sled. These are mainly sprint drills and will not help you in endurance, but will definately help you run faster. Treadmills wont do a bit of good!

I kind of disagree that you can't improve your speed using a treadmill. It does depend on what kind of speed your looking for. If your just trying to improve your overall speed on a distance run, then you can work on a treadmill. Interval training helps...do intervals of regular pace mixed with intervals of faster pace. Start with say 2 min. at reg. pace, then up the speed for 2 min. then lower again. Slowly increase your fast pace intervals. Not only will you increase your speed, but you'll get one hell of a good cardio workout-HIIT.
Gangstershoes or spamalope may offer some good advice as well as they are both seasoned runners. On the other hand, if you are trying to increase your speed for sprinting then I have to agree with the other posts. -------------- Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there. |

Speed is helped by genetics, however it isn't a limiting factor until pushed to the very limit in which a very low percentage of runners ever reach. Leg training involving squats, leg presses, calf raises, and deadlifts will help to lengthen your stride and hence also increasing your pace. Treadmills can work to increase your pace, however most prefer track time and hill climbing to avoid from having to adjust the treadmill speed and also to avoid leg training. A good way of increasing your pace includes holding your index finger tips and thumb tips together while relaxing the rest of your hand. Also move your arms back and forth quicker than your legs are going. Both of these tricks are used by endurance runners to keep their pace up when their legs say no. The very last trick I can give you is to concentrate on throwing your legs out further. You will notice that it will really wear them out for the first couple days, but as your legs strengthen, your breathing will catch up, and everything will level out at a higher pace. Then you can slowly increase your endurance at that pace. Once you get past the 3-4 mile mark at whatever pace you are doing, it's a mental game more than anything after that. good luck.

Gangstershoes is 100% right about the mental game of running. A never say die attitude and hard work will help you more than anything. Over 80% of everything you do is mental. Success starts in your head and works through the rest of your body. Keep a positive attitude, never give up, and hold your head hight when discouraged and you will find that the results will come quicker. Do not think about how quickly you are progressing, but rather think about how hard you are going to train. A watched pot never boils.....meaning that monitoring your progress like a hawk might make it easier for you to get discouraged bc it will seem like it is taking an eternity for you to reach your goals. Progress will come in time. Nothing will happen over night. However, the more one you believe that you can do something, the more likely you will be able to accomplish it. You have to be mentally ready to do something before you can actually do it. Keep your head up and train hard! Resluts will come. Good luck!!

taking a break, and doing some strength training(squats/deadlifts/calf raises) has helped me. Just a suggestion.

If you really want to get fast, find someone who really knows running form - you have no idea how much it can help you. When it comes down to the wire, genetics will have the ultimate effect, but having good running form as opposed to bad running form will make you drastically faster.
And as crazy as this sounds, the best way to get more speed is to run full speed (usually intervals). You aren't going to improve your overall speed running at 70%. You'll make your endurance better, but not your speed. But if you're just looking to get tone and in shape, check this article out!
