I was in GNC today(got some water :)), and something in there prompted me to write this. There were 2 guys ahead of me, neither showed any signs of working out a day in their lives.
Both were beginners. Ok, fine...but here is the deal. The first guy had a jug of protein(expensive Pro Complex at that), a bottle of BCAA's, a jug of creatine and some type of fat burner! Ok, can anyone guess where I am going with this? Now what I am getting at here is this, folks, there is no magic that will burn your fat off or make you gain muscle. These guys had no training experience, aptly no clue to diet, and yet going out and buying tons of supplements. They actually might as well just walk in, hand the clerk the money, and walk back out! That is what they are getting for their money. To the newbies, please, please don't fall for marketing hype/advertisements of some guy or gal that looks great with ripped abs, etc. These folks have been doing this for years. They didn't just begin and do this with some magic supplements. There are so many things you must do first before beginning to get any use from supplements. Train, eat a good diet, rest properly, and you will see results. I have stated this before, 95% of what we do is diet and exercise and rest. Maybe 5% is supplements. And that comes after your training and diet is long maxed out. There is nothing out there in any GNC store that will magically put muscle on you or burn your fat away!!! The message.....I am trying desperately to save you hard earned money! -------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

Nice post Ron, that is so true, I witnessed a similar event today where I saw girls walking out of the supplement store in my gym with boxes of Meal Replacement Shakes must have been atleast $100-$150 in supplements.

It is amazing how the something for nothing mentality prevails in people. You gotta do the work people simple as that. If these pills really worked alone, it would make medical history. REally get a grip.

I agree on your post... however buying MRP's or Whey would seem like a smart choice if those folkes feel they are lacking protein in their diet. MRP and whey IMO is smart even if your on a weight loss plan would it not?

MRP's should be used in emergency only, Protein needs should be met with whole foods, primarily. Not spending hundreds of dollars a month on MRP's to meet protein intake. I'm not going to start to a back and forth argument here because that is not the point of this thread.

Hey i am not tryin to start an argument with any post here, but protein powder is a normal diet supp. Not everyones jobs will allow for them to eat 6 cozy meals a day, or 6 health ones for that matter. Looking even in hte Abs Diet book protein whey powder is considered a "powerfood" so i guess the point to my main thread was that buying reg. protein from a health food store in my eyes would be a normal healthy buy for anyone, newbie to pro. Agree on most supps are a wast for most people but not whey plus you don't need to spend hundreds a month on whey. that is all i was getting at.

Protein powder is indeed a needed supp,(in most cases)... for some reason I figured someone would post this. :) The point of the post was simply to enlighten newbies to the supplement world. And just beginning, even a protein supp may not be needed, as they are not yet in a position to "earn" a pwo drink, it would in many cases simply be added calories for them. In the beginning, everything works. See if you are going to even stay with it first, how many folks do you see go out and buy all kinds of stuff, work out a week or two and realize they are not going to look like Arnold in a couple weeks, and quit. Thus, even protein supp is wasted money. So, food will easily fit the bill.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

Thanks for the great post bb1. As a newbie here, I've been trying to read as much as I can on these forums. I've seen lots of threads on whey protein and creatine, but didn't know if most people considered them the norm or not. I came here again this morning to try to find some answers, and I found your post. I probably WILL try some whey protein as I have a hard time getting enough in my diet, but the rest I will leave to hard work and proper diet. Thanks again. BTW, you and your wife look fabulous! It's nice to see more people in my age group looking so good. It really is inspiring.-------------- Deni ------------------------ To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe. - Anatole France |

Without the protein shake I wouldn't come anywhere near my recommended daily calorie intake (unless the FT calculator is way off). Even with the shake I still come up about 300 - 500 calories short a day.
Since I started eating multiple meals a day my appetite is so suppressed that by the next scheduled mealtime I'm not the least bit hungry. I basically have to force myself to eat. I have no grand delusions that this stuff is going to magically make me meet my goals but it sure is handy as a quick, convenient way of getting in healthy calories without feeling bloated. |

bb1, working at GNC, I get a 30% discount on top of any sales/specials. So, as a general rule, things that will expire 1-3 months out are 75% off, 4-6 months out are 50% off, and 7-8 months 33% off.
Example: When I got off work the other day, I bought... 2 4-packs of chocolate Atkins shakes (not bad, decent protein) 4 cans of MetRx RTD 40 protein shakes 2 cans (actually more like sippy boxes) of EAS Myoplex, rtd 1 GNC protein crunch bar My grand total was ~$6.70 -------------- --It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.-- Aristotle |

I wrote a paper on this sort of thing; media advertising and claiming fat loss, strength gains and muscle building. It is amazing what lengths they will go to in order to sell their product. As always a shake here and there is needed but 90% of the other stuff is just air in a container.-------------- A word to the wise is not necessary, it is the stupid ones that need advice. |

lol, the guy at our gnc pushing all the latest muscle building supplements on people probably weighs about 95lbs soaking wet. Now im not huge, nor am i trying to get that way (strictly powerlifting), but I don't think this guy should be giving me advice on anything having to do with muscle and nutrition.

Yeah we do get commission, but the people that I know don't focus on that. I've actually told people they didn't need this or that and they put it back. In any sales, there has to be trust, and if you want real trust, you have to tell the truth.
As far as a GNC salesperson's fitness level or muscle content (Doctor, heal thyself) it's important not to forget that a good coach didn't necessarily play the game, a good dentist gets cavities just like everybody else, and law enforcement people are constantly breaking the law the swore to uphold. So, that scrawny guy is just the messenger--his message could be good or not--but don't judge by his muscle mass :) Just do your research and see how close it jives with his pitch--then you'll know if you can basically trust him in any area. By the way, I refer to this website and the things posted here very often at work, especially BB's posts, on everything from malodextrin to ZMA to cutting. I love this site! I took me years to figure out how and when to take supplements the proper way. It just feels right when you are going the right direction with your supplementation. But nothing is more anabolic than eating. I limit myself to 2 protein shakes per day(one in the morning and one right after my workout). The other supplements come as you get a little more wise to what works for your body or what your body might be lacking do to diet or improper eating habits. Be careful out there guys and gals.-------------- May 28, 2005....New York City....I will be victorious! Even if I don't win, my body will be my trophy. Jdelts@freetrainers.com |

You guys are right if the diet and training is not there you are just spinning your wheels. Even with Steroids its the same way. I remember a buddy of mine was taking sus, deca, and d-bol a pretty potent AAS stack. He would come in to the gym and tell me how he ate 8 peanut butter sandwiches a day. I would just pretend I thought he knew what he was talking about lol. He gained like 15 pounds off the cycle mostly water weight and fat. Then when he got off he lost it all because he did absolutly no PCT and got a good case of the man boobs(Gyno)I guess the moral of the story is Diet 60% Training 35% Supplements 5% get the first 2 in order FIRST!! -------------- Keith Hardy CFO Serious Nutrition Solutions LLC keith@seriousnutritionsolutions.com www.seriousnutritionsolutions.com |

Thanks ogun. didnt mean to offend you, its just I've always been taught that the best coaches have played the sport. Im sure that the guy at gnc knows more than his share, but he hasn't experianced whats truly effective as opposed to what works in theory. Thats why I come to this site; to ask people like you and bb1fit, people with experiance, what works. thanx again
