Hi all,
I'm trying to get back into a healthy way of eating after about a year of yo-yo dieting. I'm 5ft 4 in and 135lbs. I had gained about 12 pounds and panicked - wanted to lose it FAST - so I put myself on a 1200-1400 cal per day diet (while doing about an hour of intense cardio and 20 min of weights) I lost about 8 lbs in 3 weeks and then my body refused to let go of another lb. (Even though I kept up the diet for another 3 months. Also had tried atkins and weight watchers when the weight came back. Anyway, I didn't know how bad this was for me at the time, but I sure know it now. It now seems that whenever I eat more than 1400 cals a day I immediately start gaining.
I'm trying to fix this mess by eating 5-6 small meals a day, concentrating on weight training and cutting the cardio to about 30min, eating balanced diet of nutritionally valuable food, but am I doomed to gain a ton of weight? I'm currently aiming to eat 1500 - 1700 cal per day. Can my metabolism be fixed and how long should it take? I just want to stop all this dieting garbage and be healthy and fit but I've done so much damage already. Help please!

try taking some apple cider vinegar pills- I heard that helps raise your metabolism, and it is very low priced at most supplement stores :) Hope this helps a bit

Try getting on a mass gaining program. The more muscle that you have, the higher your metobollic rate. I believe it is 50 extra calories burned for every lb. of muscle gained.

KG...I was in a similar situation as you...except I thought the way to get this was to stop eating and when I did maybe once or twice a day I ate too much. My metabolism was a mess. After I started following a lot of what you'll read on here (healthy whole foods, 5-6 mini meals, gallon of water a day, etc) my metabolism snapped back in place after about 2 or 3 weeks and I finally started to lose some weight. Listen to a lot of the dietery information on this site...it's good stuff and keep up with the cardio and weight training and you'll be alright. I now have more energy and am eating more then just a month ago and have lost about 5 lbs in the last 2-3 weeks...first week or two I didn't lose any at all.
The getting started part is the hardest, cause you have to break the old habits and ways of eating. However it doesn't last long and it becomes much much easier.

I would definetly try to build some lean muscle which will make you gain weight at first but the extra muscle will burn more calories, by dieting the way you did your body feeds off your muscle that is why you stop losing weight so soon your body has adapted to how you are fueling it. Do follow the food pyramid and keep up the small meals throughout the day also some interval training with your cardio should help your body to burn fat instead of muscle. I have had some sucess with muscle building while on amino supplements.

I understand your pain also. I got married about a little over a year ago, and gained 45lbs. I had such a high self esteem. Now, I am very depressed about my weight. Before I got married, I would eat everything in sight and not gain an ounce. After, I got married, I can't eat anything without gaining every ounce of what I ate. I never exercised until after I got married.

I was watching a documentry about a year ago about skinny people who eat junk and do no excercise........ the summary was that although they did nothing they were allways moving around, fidgeting... basicly active without being what we would call active.
Sorry just realised this has nothing to do with this post directly, just that constant low level activity increases the calorie burn.
