seated calf raises

Help! My program calls for seated calf raises and I don't have any machine. I searched through the messages and the exercise descriptions but there I must be thicker than I used to be because I can't picture what I'm supposed to do. Can anyone help me? It would be most appreciated.

You don't necessarily need a machine to do them. Sit on a bench, put a db or bb across your knees, put the ball of your foot on a 2X4 (or a couple of them) and have at it. Concentrate on the contraction at the top of the move and get as full a stretch as you can at the bottom without bouncing.

I have a question similar to this one about seated calf raises. Are they the same as leg extensions? Because they sound the same to me. The description here doesn't have a picture though so I can't tell...

No they are very different. For one on leg extensions the pad goes over your ankles, for seated calf raises the pad goes over your thighs. In leg extensions your extend your legs until the are straight out horizontally, in seated calf raises your knees stay bent with the movement coming from you raising your toes up and down. That's probably not the best explanation you'll hear, but I should get an A for effort =)

We actually don't have a seated calf raise machine at our gym, but we have a standing one. Does that make a difference? It kinda hurts my shoulders...

Once you get used to the shoulder thing, I think you may find that the standing calf works even better. At least I prefer it. One thing you may want to do, is one set have your feet pointed inward, the next have them outward. Calves you will probably find can be very stubborn to grow.

Actually, I'm not trying to build muscle mass, so bigger calves aren't a priority. I'm just following what ft's training program says for me to do. Thanks though :)
