How can seated twists be effective if they take almost no effort? I only have access to free weights, so my program has me doing the broomstick thing. Can I honestly expect to ever see significant improvements in my obliques if I never use a twisting machine with resistance? I understand ft is starting me out slowly, but at some point I will have to twist against resistance, right???

Well, you can do crunches without weight and get results, I think it's all about proper form and concentrating on the muscles being worked.

As I said before it's YOU who have to make this exercise work. Contract hard your obliques every time you turn and relax when in the middle. If you do this right, you can feel the muscles work and you'll get results.

One other thing: when you work ANY muscle (yes, this includes abs) group with weights, they will get bigger/bulkier! So, if you're aiming for definition on your abs, you should not train them with weights.

Oh, I did work with some weights in the beginning to get my six pack thou...... It's necessairy. Now I don't need any weight.
I honestly don't work my abs a lot any longer except from working them statical (or isometric) I also work my abs a lot with the way I breath.
It's true thou that I've never really put on weight to work my obliques (and I'm great fan of the "broom" exercise...).

I have to say that I really have not done any consistent ab workout in a while. I have done so for 3 weeks now and have seen some results. This workout program at FT is working great!!
