I read about injuries in the section that ft has, but my question is how can I workout without causing further damage? For some reason, mostly on tricep days my left shoulder all the way down to my elbow on the bicep side has a dull ache the whole time. I then lose range of motion, followed by soreness. I am almost done with my first program and I can't stop now though. What should I do?

Well, you don't have to go heavy on the weights. Why don't you lighten the load a little?

RICE therapy will work after the workout.

I planned on taking the rice therapy up. I wanted to know if it was okay to just do lighter weights for a while. Thanks.

The old school of thought was to just work through the injury but all that does is make it worse. Try taking a look at the movements you're doing and switch up to a different move. I don't know if that was clear or not but what I mean is for example, you're doing military presses on a machine and that bothers your injury, switch over to dumbell presses on a slight incline bench. You're still hitting the muscle group but a change in the angle you're using for it. If you can't use much weight, there are a lot of alternatives. Robert put some good tips about different strategies. One that I've used when I hurt a rotator cuff was to run the dumbell rack. I don't know what your strength level is but I'm pretty strong for an old geezer but when I do it I start out with 10 pounders - 1 set of 10 to 12, no rest and pick up the 20's for 8 to 10 and so on up to the 50's. No rest and start back down again. You can do this with relatively light weight and still get a burn you won't believe. Just pick an angle that doesn't hurt your injury.

Good advice mikencharleston,

I have a similar injury.. my rotator is acting up again. But I just work around it and if I can't switch the exercise I lower the wieght and squeeze out the form.

Injuries suck.

Injuries suck ass. I made mine way worse by playing basketball on Friday and I had to sit out my workouts completely through the weekend. Going to try to lift again today...

My weakness have always been my forearms. Certain exercises just make them tender...guess tennis doesn't help. And, I used to have a bad case of tennis elbow.

I have noticed that they don't get as tender ever since I've incorporated more forearm exercises into my routine. I also try not to go too heavy on close-grip bench presses...unless I haven't played tennis for a few days.

For some reason I am drastically lop sided. My left side of my body is very un-coordinated, weaker, and just smaller. It doesn't surprise me that my left shoulder is causing the problems.

At least that wouldn't keep me from working out!

I broke a toe last summer (hit it against a dumbell.... please no comments!!!lol) Well, this didn't stop me from working out!!

Seriously, it's easy to hurt yourself in weight training if you don't do it well so be careful. As Cainsands said, injuries are noooooo fun!!!!!!!

A good warm up and some stretching could be the answer.

I was actually doing my abs last night and kicked a barbell. I was sooo pissed because I seriously bruised the bone. Doing side leg lifts while the barbell with about 80lbs on it sat above me wasn't smart.

Its seems as though evrytime I workout on the bench, my right shoulder seems to get injuried. Is there anyway to get my shoulder stronger. ie viatmins or hey even milk?

i had a rotator cuff injury while lifting quite a while back (2 years maybe?). it was pretty painful, went to PT. felt good for a while then came back. but over time, i've noticed that lifting almost becomes a therapy for it and it feels best when i'm amisdt a very consistent and rigerous training program.

I'm curious as to whether you are saying it still bothers you, but the lifting has improved it, or over time and with lifting it no longer exists.. I have recently had a nagging rotator cuff problem that I work around.. this made me wonder if it will ever go away completely??
