I've been doing shrugs using a smith machine (standing with the bar in front, straight up and down shrugs, no rotation). The first time I did shrugs, I really felt soreness after the workout (for 2 days!), but after that day, I haven't been able to get the same feeling.

I've been upping the weight, and at first, I thought that it may be because I was using too much weight lately, but no, I lowered the weight, made sure I did reps in good form, and added even more reps to what I did that one day...but still nothing.

Why is this? I've lost that lovin' feeling!

lol I know what you mean, I can't seem to get back the soreness either. I haven't tried lowering the weight or anything, I've just kept on going heavy and believing that for some reason that my muscles were just getting used to the heavy weight and not getting as sore. I don't know what's up either.

perhaps if you do the shrugs with dumbbells or a free barbell instead of on the smith machine you'll see a difference. i mix my shrugs between bbs an dbs so my traps don't get used to the same exercise over and over again. it seems to work for me.

You think? It'd have to be barbells, because I'll have trouble dealing with 100+ lbs DB in both hands.

I don't know if my body is 'getting' used to the Smith machine...I mean, by the next workout, I wasn't feeling sore, and I doubt my body adapted that fast...

Howdie is right....and don't think you will do the same weight with dumbbells you do with barbells. Try seated dumbbell shrugs, these are killer and give a great stretch. Hold each rep up around your ears for a couple counts, don't just go up and down. Time under tension. If you have trouble with the dumbbells, get some straps. If your barbell lifts get heavy enough, you will need them for those too. The grip always gives out before the strength.

The only thing that makes my traps sore at all anymore are power cleans. Not even heavy deadlifts get the job done. But then, you don't have to be sore to be progressing.
