Ooooooo, now there's an idea: discovering the "Weight room commandments" has now become my new quest! Give me time, my brothers, and I shall seek out and find the truth!!!!

I thought of a couple ideas, just throwing them around, see what you think for a start.
1. Thou Shal not try to lift weight that you cannot move without using your total bodies momentum, two of your buddies, or a forklift.
2. Thou Shal not leave the gym without a shirt drenched in sweat.
3. Thou Shal not talk excessively in the gym, you are there for a purpose, now lift.
4. Thou Shal not covet thy neighbors weight bench, while he steps away for a drink of water, especially if he's bigger than you.

5. Thou shalt not talk on your cell phone, whilst sitting on a bench, during your 5-10 minute over-rest between sets.

that squatting comment is the truth brother. that crap just pisses me off soooo bad i cant stand it. especially when people walk aroudn bragging about how much they squat. try bending ur knees wen u squat buddy! they sould have pictrues infront fo teh racks for those imbasels. but the thing i hate is wen u try to help some1 and they talk to u like ur a dick. its like ur the one doin it wrong not me. and they think ur jelous cuz they r squatting 405 for reps wen in reality they can prolly do about 135 for 1!

I think everyone hates people who are so concerned with shifting the weight any way possible to claim a heavier lift.

A bench press needs to be from bar against the chest to arms fully extended
A squat needs to be from legs fully bent to legs fully extended
A chin up is from arms fully straightened to arms fully contracted
A curl is all the way up all the way down, back straight.

Machine lifts, calculated lifts don’t count, and spotters are there to spot not to do the lift for you.

I’d also like to suggest the following,

Put the weights back on the rack (in order).

A session down the gym involves more than an hour of bench press.

If you don’t break a sweat and wipe down the machines afterwards, stay at home.

Don’t get in someone’s way, or block there refection mid set. If you are not active, free up the space for those who are. And unless you’re a doctor on call, NO PHONES.

If you are using less then your body weight on flat bed calf raises or squats (and not recuperating form injury), just hop on the spot and free up the machine.

Don’t judge others by there lifts, unless you know there aims, training program, how far through a session they are, medical history, ect.

And don't drop the freaking dumb bells! I don't care if you have hit failure, bring them in to your body and then rest and rack them up. It is damaging to the equipment and irritating to everyone in the gym.

Geese guys, I'm glad I have home equipment.

Regarding the squat thing, it is half way down right??? Seems like I read Rev8 say that very thing.

In order to get the most benefits out of a real free weight squat, it needs to hit what is called "parallel," that is, when your thighs are parallel to the the ground. Higher than that doesn't work the legs to the full extent, and lower than that puts unnesessary stress on the knees.

Because I am new to 'free weight' squats, (used Smith before) I started out with something I saw on a poster at the gym. I put a reg flat bench just behind me and when I squat I just touch the bench with my butt. This is kind of helping me get a feel for how far I need to go down. Knowing that I can't go too far, or fall has made me more comfortable with this one.

That is also how i learned azredhead, I think that is the best way to learn to tell you the truth. That way you KNOW everytime you go down you are going far enough, but not too far.

What your are doing, Victoria, is a version of what is called a box squat, which is a very effective means to develop squat strength used by powerlifters.... Keep up the good work!

Heres one:

Thou shall not GRUNT EXCESSIVLY while lifting your weights! It really doesn't make you look any stronger.

Its okay to grunt once in awhile, but when people start sounding like wild apes with their grunting its gets distracting! Use strong controlled breaths instead of the "HUNNGGGHH! UUGGNN! YAAHRRNG!! HMMMRRPHHGGH!!!" that everyone else in the gym DOES NOT WANT TO HERE.

- Its never about how much you can lift, or how many reps you do. Its just about doing it, and doing it right.

Well, i disagree with that one..there's a sign in my gym that says no grunting or yelling...if you ain't lifin heavy enought that air escapes effortlessly through your vents, if at all, why bother....you should have to yell and grunt not purposely but if you lift heavy, it's gotta happen...plus if you act stronger, you think you are stronger...you actually become stronger....allowing you to lift more than if you were just a quite laid back lifter.

Grunting is ok, but I do get annoyed by people that just plain scream while lifting. If the weight is that heavy that you are about to blow an O-RING then lighten up a little. Swallow your pride and press on.

Yep, I hate the screamers. there was a guy at the gym I worked at who sounded like a bad porn flick or something. Maybe a snuff film. People would stop waht they were doing everywhere in the building and shake their heads.
i do admit, however to sounding like a steam engine or something, because I really tend to use my breath for strengthwhen i lift (I think it is left over from karate). I get looks, but i don't yell or anything, so f- off.

1. Clean up after yourself; your mother doesn't work here
2. Place dumbbells down safely after your set. If you drop them then it is an automatic kick in the groin.
3. Stare at yourself, not others.
4. Wipe your freakin' sweat off of the bench
5. Don't holler like an ape everytime you lift a weight.
6. Weight belts, straps, and wraps are for 1RMs, not for crunches or for looking good.
7. Train hard AND Train Smart.
8. If you are going to train, then learn how to do it correctly. People have been killed using incorrect form.
9. Don't talk to somebody when they're performing their set.
10. Ask people if they are done before taking their bench, squat rack, etc...; On the flip side, if you see somebody waiting then ask them to join in. We all just want to get better.
11. Nobody cares how much you lift; just keep getting better

Straps are overused. I pulled 655 on a deadlift without straps, or any other aid as far as that goes. I think anytime you use straps takes away a great opportunity to develop your grip strength. I see people use them for lat pull downs and pull-ups. That is rediculous.

Big Andrew, your 6 are perfect, especially the one about poeople doing sets in front of the db rack. This is so bad at my gym it is ridiculous, it is like going through a freaking maze to re rack my db. I try to be nice, exuse me, exuse me, etc. however by the middle of my workout when I hit that zone, it goes to move, get out of my way, stop talking and socializing and get the hell out, your taking up my O2, my gym is in the basement of our rec center. I call it the dungeon, but it gets so hot in there, I love it man. Just walking in and that smell hits me, it is like my body knows it is in for some off the hook pain! Great thread guys and girls, made my crapy day a little better! Take care peeps.

How about:
1. Thou shalt not take a long break on the equipment between sets - weight rooms are busy, please let someone else in.
2. Thou shalt not sit and stare at woman doing deadlifts - either from the front or the back. grr
3. Thou shalt not marinate in cologne/perfume before coming to gym - it really can be as bad a smell as sweat to some people
4. Thou shalt not approach people pretending to be a fitness know-it-all and suggest correct form to a stranger - especially if they really have no idea as to the proper form and are just trying to strike up a conversation/hit on you
5. Thou shalt not make fun of overweight/not-yet-fit people - they are there to be fit - let's set an example
6. Thou shalt remember that proper form is better than bigger weights

on the grunting thing, I think some people overplay it to draw attention to themselves, but there are legitimate times, when you don't even try or think about it and it happens, for instance, i always find myself grunting throiugh the last few reps of my last set of squat, because im pushin myself as hard as i can. But all the time is rediculous.

I think grunting is ok only if you have a ton of weight on the bar and you absolutely cannot control it.

if i'm carrying heavy dumbells, or somthing of the sort.......and your not doing anything, be kinda an dmove out of my way, I barly got through the set, let along walk around absticle to rerack the weights.

When I perform cleans, deadlifts there is a no "walk zone" 7ft in diameter around me for safty. You walk in this no fly zone, and you will have one of the folowing: broken foot, cuncusion or at least a nasty bruise.

Andrew,
There were so many kids at my gym that were getting hurt from doing cleans and snatch and jerks with improper form, that now no one is allowed to do any of them. Luckily they still allow us to deadlifts but man, seriously thinking of just forking out the $ to go to a nice spacious gym were you can do whatever lifts you deem worthy to your body. Just venting, take it easy guys!
