Hello Folks,

I just came across this site and I am impressed from what I have seen.

I hope that any of you guys can advise me on having a better body tone.
Let me give you some info on me.
Male
Age 27
weight - 145LBS.
Smoker - I have been smoking for 13 years - approx 20 a day
Drinking - A bottle of Pepsi a day & about 12 beer a week - very little water.
Eating - no breakfast - sandwich for lunch and maybe chicken tenders with fries for dinner - very little snacks like candy in between.
Execise - 30 minutes of 15LBS arm weights every 2 days.
Work - in an office so I sit on a chair for 10 hours per day :(

Goal - to gain weight and build muscle so I dont look skinny and unhealthy.

So I have been like this for the past ten years, I find it hard to gain or loose weight and I know my diet and the smoke are a big factor in this.
I am currently taking MUS-L Blast everyday followed by some arm weight lifts (not even sure if I am doing this right).
To be honest I no 0% about keep fit and building muscle.

What is your best adice for someone like me??

Many thanks,

GD.

Welcome. I am no expert, but here is what I have learned about some of the things you are doing.

1) Quit smoking. Not so easy, but smoking inhibits the absorption rate of many nutrients. The body has to use energy, vitamins, etc. that you consume to fight off the bad effects of smoking. Vitamin C being one of the main things that is depleted.

2) Cut the soda and add water. rink 6-8 glasses per day.

3) Don't skip breakfast! You need to take in 20-25 grams of protein minimum our your body will think you are trying to starve and go into storage mode. Eat 4-5 small meals per day.

4) 30 minimum exercise is good, but won't build muscle quickly especially just doing arms.

5) If you don't have goos nutrition, your other goals will be hard to achieve.

The best thing to do is fill out your freetrainers profile and look at the nutrition and meal sections. Once you get that in line, you can then focus on muscle goals. Remember though, it will be a process. Nothing happens overnight and there is no "quick fix" or "miracle pill" although supplementation (vitamins, aminos, etc.) may be helpful with some of the obstacles you have.

And if it makes you feel better, within the last year I had to quit smoking & drinking, change my diet, and make many of the changes I am suggesting. I dropped 30 pounds of fat in 2 months and have put on a good bit of lean muscle mass with exercise and supplementation.

Good luck and if you need moral support, you can email me directly. My email is in my profile.

Good luck and remember, Nutrition works!

Hey thanks for your advice, I appreciate that.
I know that smoking is a big downfall with my weight gain and have tried so many things to give up and I will keep trying :)
I am also aware of the soda intake and that i need to drink more water - the way i see it is when I smoke I need something fizzy to kill the thirst, I need to just force myself on getting over these two hurdles and it will happen.
Again, thanks for your advise and offer on support.

Your very welcome! And I am sincere about the offer of support. I quit smoking just a little over a year ago and it was VERY difficult. You will be amazed how your body won't crave the nicotine if you have good nutrition, I know I was.

Nutritionworks gave you some great advice, but you would not last if you tried to change your lifestyle that suddenly. You would go bizerk, I know I would. Do it moderately. First try doing a complete home workout, entailing full body routine and include some cardio. You will, on your own after seeing results, will WANT to eat better, then probably stop smoking.
But if you do it all at once, you will go nuts. Welcome to the community and enjoy your new lifestyle.

Yes I agree with carivan. I did not mean to imply that it would be a speedy process. I struggled with the smoking for years and with being overweight. I quit sodas first, replacing to diet first then water eventually. The smoking followed, but when I improved my eating habits with the help of vitamins and supplements I really noticed the difference. The hey is be persistent, believe you can change your habits, and never give up. When someone says "You'll never be able to do that," don't absorb that kind of negativety. You can do anything you set your mind to, with patience over time, and there are planty of places, like on here, to get the support to keep you positive.

You can do it!

I was also a beer dringking smoker and I know what you mean about the fizz factor. I cut the pop and beer cold turkey but replaced it with carbonated water or club soda.
I does the trick for the fizz and there are no cal or sugars to deal with.
